Grizzly Bear Gets Locked In $70,000 Toyota

Interesting story:
There are no scratches on the outside of this car, but the vehicle is totaled. Below is the story and the pics.

A man in Waterton, came out to find the inside of his 18-month-old Toyota Sequoia trashed! A grizzly bear had somehow got a door open (easy considering the way the handles are) and once inside got trapped when the door shut behind him. Probably by the wind.

The Toyota was a Platinum Edition. All the door panels were ripped off, the headliner torn to pieces, all headrests, the leather seats, the dash shredded. The steering column was twisted sideways. Two of the six airbags went off, the other four the bear ripped to pieces. (You can probably imagine a trapped grizzly being hit with an airbag in an enclosed space! He must have figured he was in for the fight of his life.....and by the looks of this car, he won the fight.)

When the bear ripped off the door panels he also clawed all the wiring harnesses out. Toyota figures every wire he pulled or clawed at resulted in alarm bells, voices or sparks.

The head mechanic at Calgary Toyota doubted if they had the expertise to put this vehicle back together, even if they had enough parts to do it. And, to add insult to injury, the bear took a big dump in the back of the SUV....and then broke out the rear window.

Fish and wildlife officers have inspected the damage and figure it was a 3-year-old grizzly from blood left behind; they are doing DNA.

The vehicle has been written off by the insurance company. The cost new was over $70,000, and they stopped counting repair costs at $60,000+.

    Holly crap!!
in a related story, the nhtsa, citing a clear and present danger to the safety of wildlife, has mandated that all vehicles be made bear-proof, beginning in 2017. All interior components must be bear-safe, and must be impervious to damage from said animals. No comment yet from auto manufacturers, but it is expected they will begin tooling up for bicycle manufacturing sometime during the 2016 model year.

Also, the man at the center of the toyota sequoya story that promted the nhtsa's action was found guilty of animal endangerment, felonious assault on an endangered species, and criminal neglect of nature. He faces a maximum of 73 years in prison when he is sentenced later next month. No word yet if gloria alred, who is representing the bear, will seek a civil judgement in this case, or if the bear will seek class action status in his product liability case against toyota. I guess that is better than being thrown to the wolves...

It states in the article that the bear got out the rear window after taking a dump. What a way to go ! Imagine the look on the face of the owner that returned to his truck. And I complain when I return to my truck from shopping and find a ding in my door

That is awesome. Black bears must be a bit easier on car interiors; when I worked service at a Volvo dealer we had a car towed down from western Maryland that had a black bear pop it's sunroof and camp out inside for a bit. Looked like a big dog had been in the car, 'cept for the broken glass and dented roof.

That's funny!! How many of our moms have said that after something gets broken. A thread should be started on famous sayings by our mothers as we were growing up.
Though they do make some nice speakers up there.
