    garter snake.jpg

This is 1 of 3 that my cat has brought into the house for us to share.
2 were common garter snakes that I captured and released.
The first one she brought in was a baby copperhead and we were all lucky it was near death from her bite to it.
I don't mind her bringing harmless creatures that she has hunted but we are not to crazy about snakes in our living room.

That garter looks like he's been eating well. Lucky about that copperhead not killing your cat, the babies are very dangerous.

yep a bullsnake. Should be relatively harmless to adults. I would watch kids around it. It may bite which will hurt.

I get garter snakes in my Bilco doors every year. They love them for some reason.

    Yea, good and dead!

Jk, I like snakes. I used to catch them all the time in the James river. Calm em down, make friends, chill for a while, then let them go.

When I was younger I fad a few boas.

It's just a bull snake. When the neighbors come over and ask me to evict a snake from their yard (I'll evict the non venomous ones) I usually tell them they'd be better off having the snake in their yard than the rats it eats.

A good "general" rule of thumb is, if the snakes head is a pronounced triangle shape, it's venomous. This only applies to lower 48 AFAIK. Australia/Asia/Africa.......whole nother story with them !

That's a gopher snake. Great to have around if you have mice/rat problems. They sometimes vibrate their tail trying to emulate a rattler.

Yea, those will bite you too. It'll hurt, but they're venom-less.

I've been bitten by snakes probably 10-20 times, half from captives, half in the wild. None of them hurt very much at all. They bled a lot, but didn't really hurt. I think it's because their teeth are so damn sharp, they just slice right through. Plus adrenaline helps.

That works for pit vipers (rattlesnakes etc), but we also have coral snakes here in Az, and they don't have triangle head at all.

Guess I should of tried to relocate the critter knowing now it was not venimous, but I took the shoot now ask questions later stance.
It was an epic battle between me,my co2 pistol, and this (thought it was a child eating cobra at the time) snake.

Just pointing out that general rule can get you bit by something you don't want to get bit by, that's all.

The thing about coral snakes is I've read that they can't really open their mouths wide enough to bite a human anywhere other than maybe your little finger.

I don't want to test that one out.
