Just wondering if any of you guys living in earthquake country have any tips or advice for protecting your gear from earthquakes. Last night I was awakened violently(drug induced) from my sleep, thinking the ground was shaking, and my first thoughts was wondering if my Maggies were ok.

Any suggestions or tips on protecting your gear?

How bout moving away from the San Andreas Fault line, that might help a bit, arent you guys spose to break apart from the rest of us and float away from the rest of us? I guess you got two worries now, keeping those Maggies of yours upright and dry. All kidding aside I lived in San Diego for a few years, and was exposed to a few of those, scary stuff. I'am guessing you dont have Earthquake insurance on the homestead or you would not be worrying.

We are in an apartment now and cannot get renters insurance to cover the audio. We should have never left Indiana, but that's all water under the bridge now.

Why won't renters insurance cover the audio equip?

We don't have our names on the lease. My wife's sister was renting this place, but she moved to NYC, and we are finishing out the time she had left here...

Gotcha. Wasn't sure if it was something that renters insurance just didn't cover. We don't have renters insurance but I've been thinking about how it all works lately.

John I hate to say it, but an earthquake means the f#c!ing Earth is moving. I don't think you're gonna protect your gear if she decides she wants to trash your gear. Just sayin...

Generally, it's 15% of the loss. If you lose a $500,000 home in an earthquake, your deductible is $75,000. Of course, that amount can be deducted from the total amount the insurance company pay you.

If you have free-standing speakers, there's very little you can do. During the 1989 Loma Prieta, one of my Sony floor-standing speaker toppled over front first. No damage done to the drivers and they are still serving in my sister's system. At that time, I was living in an area which was basically landfill, where intensity of a quake can get intensify.

You got me, but then again that's one reason I'm NOT on your side. As much as I love that California climate which is so much like the climate of my ancestors, even the terrain; and lost my heart in San Diego (what a PERFECT climate that is!!) [sorry Tony--it''s NOT San Francisco]. I don't like the ground moving under my feet.

How much time do you have left on the rental John? And have you been looking for places! I would imagine that the market out there, even in this economy, must still be a little "high"?

Get a real pair of speakers heavier than a pair of Asian room dividers.

I agree with this statement .

John have you even called to ask if the insurance company needs your name on the lease to have renters insurance? Otherwise maybe look into getting your name ON the lease so you can get renters.

Love that quote in your sig, Larry! It says it "all". In a day and age where "everyone" is an "expert" and "everyone" is entitled to an "opinion". I can't tell you how may times I hear this in a college classroom no less. And how many, many times I have to point out that what is so "simply" illustrated in your quote! Bravo!
