My father has a large collection of 78's he is giving me.
Now what to play them on. He has an old Victorola that doesnt work.

Question?

Should I get the Victorola fixed or buy a new used one?
Should I get an old Console that can play 33,45,and 78's
Should I get a turntable that plays all three.

Question?

Do you need a special needle just for 78?

Thanks!
I got static in my head
The reflected sound of everything

There is nothing like listening to old 78's on a Victrolla. Keep in mind the records should say victrolla on them, later 78's are not meant for the heavy arm assembly/big needle and will be destroyed on the first play. An old standard issue school phonograph works well, sounds good and doesn't destroy the newer records. There is also the option of one of the new DJ turntables which has 78rpm and a variable speed control. I play with all three versions depending on my mood and type of record. The best cheapest option was the school type phonograph.
    Vinyl, the final frontier...

Avantgarde horns, 300b tubes, thats the kinda crap I want... :D

Some of the older idler wheel Duals have the 78 speed. I use a Dual CS-5000 for mine. If you have some early Rock & Roll 78s you may wish to check their value before playing them.

I had an old Technics belt-drive modified to play 78s. But the easiest thing to do is get a new table. I think the Audio-Technicas play 78s. You will need a different stylus for 78s, as gdb said.

If you can find one reasonably priced, Lenco made an idler drive four speed table that does 78.
