How long do you give a speaker?

I'm just curious about your methods of choosing a speaker. Are you like Brock (H9) and take 12 to 13 years of evaluation on a pair of speakers or are you like me and think you should know instantly (my method may be leaning more towards Brocks in recent months)? I wonder if speaker buying is a love at first sight type of thing or a let's date and see how it goes type of thing. I'm curious about your personal methods and how you determine what stays and goes.
Here's one of mine. I brought the KEF Q300's home, connected them to the system, and my first impression was that they were far to laid back for my tastes. In fact, this was my impression for the first few days. Eventually I learned that what I absolutely loved about them was simultaneously what I hated about them (it's complicated right?), I could listen to them all day long BECAUSE they were so laid back. I started getting used to the sound around week or so and started really falling in love with them. The coherence of the Uni-Q driver is awesome but does take some getting used to.
Now, today I brought the Dynaudio Audience 70 towers home and first thing the pops out at me is how much detail is on the top end. It's not harsh, but it's just so much more out front than the KEF's, almost too much. It's my first day with them and I'm already not sure if they're going to stay. I wouldn't say I prefer the KEF's over them I'd just say they're very different than what I'm used to. I'm thinking it's a case of not knowing what I want in a women but there is a lingering thought that once she comes along I'll know :P The only speaker that really stood out for me in the past year was the PSB Synchrony line of speakers on a Rogue Tube Integrated. To bad they're out of reach for me.
Anyway, I'd love to swap some stories, maybe learn a thing or two

Dude, I'm the same way. You sold the Tylers already you ****! -
Find you a set of Tylers, mod the **** out of them and you will be done...
I have converted alot of people this route with no one looking back... unfortunately I just lost my mind. I can't say I regret it though - I just dont listen to music like I use too...
But yeah, 30-60 seconds tells me all I need to know... the second the vocals hit is enough.- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -

That's interesting. Could you elaborate a little?
Mods would you please move this thread, thanks! -
Atleast 30-45 days. Not 12-13 years or a couple days like you do. Do you marry your girl after 3-4 days?
H9"Appreciation of audio is a completely subjective human experience. Measurements can provide a measure of insight, but are no substitute for human judgment. Why are we looking to reduce a subjective experience to objective criteria anyway? The subtleties of music and audio reproduction are for those who appreciate it. Music is a part of "life" if you stop listening, you just "die" (maybe--the jury is still deliberating on that)?
Brock makes a good point, about knowing your wife and speakers.
I don't think I could ever tell anything about a set of speakers in 60 seconds? Unless I thought the world were a very transparent place where things revealed themselves, effortlessly.
I know the original poster is kidding above, but I've had one pair of towers that I've owned for 22 years and I still haven't reached a definitive conclusion, because:
1. They do not "always" sound the "same".
2 And are incredibly dependent on the source of amplification--extremely so.
3. Sound great in some rooms and very dull in others?
But, in general I "understand" exactly what you're experiencing above. Been there many times. Bought something, wasn't that impressed. Time passed and it just kept getting better and better and I couldn't figure out why I doubted early on.
Tyler Acoustics...haven't heard those yet. But god, there are "so" many many speakers out there the search is sure to drive you stark raving "mad". Don't have enough "decades" left to find the Holy Grail. Probably never will just like in the legend!

That's interesting, because you just described my exact experience with my lsi9s. To me they are now like a super comfy blanket that I want to wear all day and never get tired of. I think partially, your brain and ears have to adjust to a different speaker by sort of learning their nuances. Just like with women...Living Room 7.1 HT Rig:
