my school decided it would be a good idea to put a couple of the 2.1 lifestyle systems in our student union. The midbass coming out of those small cubes is almost laughable. I wish I had the brilliant idea to market speakers so well. I bet if someone were to design a similarly sized system with better components that sounded legitimately slightly better than bose, and then market and publish extensive double blind listening tests they'd be rolling in the dough.

6 months ago I was at a party at my friends house: I'd assembled the surround sound system in the basement and it was a kickass JBL and H/K system that I got for like $1100, all speakers, receiver, and cables included. Someone was asking me about it and I told them what I paid and he said that he had one of those bose cube systems. "A lot more expensive" he says. I'll bet it was sir, I'll bet it was.

Nope. I disagree. The people who buy bose only care that they get the best. What it sounds like is not a factor. They will look you straight in the eye and tell you the bose one is the better one even if they liked the sound of the other one better. After all, they are relying on the bose name. After all, if everyone thinks they are the best then why buy anything else just to save a few dollars. Might as well know you have the best.

When a guy tells you Bose is the best even though he's heard other systems, he's talking pure crap. He knows it BLOSE. He's just afraid to get his **** kicked by the wife if he gets a bigger system.

I agree. Couple of the sales guys here got the lifestyle trying to bragg about it. I simply laugh and say i'll put my system up against there's anyday even with my entry level system. No takers yet! :D

While I agree that BOSE has nice systems, because of the fact that I have a '92 Nissan Maxima GXE with the BOSE system factory, I still think that POLK could "spank that ****";) . My speakers for the BOSE system come prefitted with built in amps that the speakers mount in; creating a crisp clear sound at low levels. But... when you crank it... it blows with distortion. The factory BOSE speaker wore out in no time and the rears were blown when I got the car. I have since replace the factory rears with a set of Polk DB650's (6"x9") in the factory mounts with the amps. And these babies are slammin.:D I have also installed a set in the front as well for a good surround effect. I checked on "replacing" the factory BOSE speakers and the damn things are $400 bucks apiece! What the hell are they thinking. Those speakers sucked. "I can crank my Polks all day long and they keep going strong.":p

Obviously no one cares to sit down and actually decide for themselves. No other speaker company I have seen has taken a direct marketing campaign against bose, so all Bose does is brag about research and it sells. If you were to open up a mall chain specifically for your speakers like Bose has done, with a sign out front that says, "Don't Believe the Marketing Hype, 'X Audio' preferred over Bose 5 to 1 " I think you would be very successful.

The reason bose sells so much is because they spend so much on marketing; if you spent a comparable amount and directly targeted bose as an inferior product, you'd change people's minds. Only problem is that Bose is notoriously litigous

Cambridge Soundworks ring a bell Ceruleance? They have been marketing speakers direct to the consumer for quite a while now, with a few stores in the Boston and San Francisco areas. The company was started by the late Henry Kloss, and I dare say they are not compromised products as Bose's are. Mr. Kloss' designs are timeless, and will do the Mexican Hat Dance on any product Mr. Bose might offer. Also was the first in the industry to offer a 10 year warranty, that was retroactive.

I've heard some cambridge stuff. Good stuff for budget systems, but I never really thought of it as a competitor for bose's market, they have no retail stores that I have ever seen, and most people I know that have cambridge stuff are poor college students.

I daresay that ANY of the CS products that are similarly priced to Bose products, would far outperform them. The CS products that are much more affordably priced, well, they would too. Try logging on to www.hi-fi.com, and take a look at the Newton series of products. I know several people who didn't buy Newton, they just purchased the CS Model 6 or 17's, and for what they spent, you'd be hard pressed to outdo them. First ten year warranty in the speaker industry is nothing to sneeze at either. Retroactive I believe.
