Another Craiglist thread.....uugghh

So every now and then I venture there to look for something specific. But I swear every time I go people are such flakes. So my question is, If you list something on craigslist do you feel the price is negotiable unless the seller says firm?

I was looking for a 4th generation IPOD Nano. Nothing spectacular. Guy had one listed for 75 dollars tells me it is going on EBAY tomorrow if not sold today. I offered 60 dollars after searching ebay and amazon used prices. Guy gets all **** telling me he can get 120 for it on eBay. I politely respond telling him he will eventually sell it for 60 dollars after ebay and paypal fees, and I would pay 65 for it cash today. The guy still wont budge, and I understand that if your price is firm...just post that its firm! Am I wrong in thinking that?

I wouldn't worry about it. Too many variables on Craigslist. Too many personality types. Some good, some bad, some nuts and a few "unreasonable".

I think that you will find that there is a correlation between unreasonable price and unreasonable person. You can try an offer but don't be surprised by the rude response.

You are also assuming that everyone that posts on Craigslist has half a brain .

Lol, Jes's sisters boyfriend just had this gripe. He called on a canoe that was about 60 miles from us, the guy had $550.00 on it, no firm notice. He asked the guy if he would go get it the next day if he would take $500.00, being that its an hour one way drive. I could hear the guy screaming and cussing him from the next room, I don't think he made an unreasonable offer. I was dumbfounded, I wonder if these people go through life treating coworkers, family and friends that way, or if there just looking to vent to some nameless on the phone. Either way, if your going to list something for sale in public, expect offers, lowballers or not...

I think unless someone specifically says 'firm', offers are fair game. But, at the same time, if the price of something is more than fair to begin with, I will just pay the asking price right off the bat. I don't have to 'win' by getting them to go even lower.

The only time I get mad at offers on my items is when someone says they will take it, they show up or meet you somewhere just to say "hey would you take 40?" NO, I want the 50 as that's what we seemed to have agreed upon if you didn't ask if I would take something else after we made these arrangements.

    I hear you grimmace.
I'll never forget towing a 69' Roadrunner from Detroit Mi to Naperville IL only to have the guy try to change the deal with a new offer.
We're talking after 5 pages of descriptions & untold pictures. Talk about PO'ed. The only thing that calmed me down was stopping for gas in Toledo OH and selling another RR to a gas station attendant.
btw: the first 69 ended up going to a guy in PA at the original price.

Yeah, that is definitely unacceptable. If someone did that to me, and didn't want to pay the agreed upon price, I would simply get back in my car and drive off. Probably grab some liquor on the way home too.

However, as others have said, I do agree that offers are okay as long as the ad doesn't specify firm. I also tend to do the same thing as DSkip as I expect some negotiation. Just make any offers you have before we agree to meet...

Don't know about you guys, but I've had fantastic luck selling things on craigslist lately. Even had a guy offer to pay more than I what I listed the item for the other day! Packing it up to ship to Nigeria was a pain, but he 'kindly' offered to pay shipping. Gave him my bank account number so he can wire transfer the funds since they don't have paypal over there. Patiently waiting for the funds to come in, but am stoked about this deal!

Most CL *ssh*les just show up with half the agreed to amount and get upset when you leave.

Luckily I haven't had that happen to me yet. However, if it does, they are certainly free to get as upset as they want as I am leaving. As a nice parting gift, they will also get to see my pet "bird" as I depart; not many people get that privilege!

I think both CL things that piss me off were already mentioned.
1). When you agree on the price over e-mail/phone, please don't show up with less $ for any reason. I very politely walked at least two people out the door when they offered less. Both all of a sudden had the correct amount, but it's the principle. I think I bulged for one poor guy and pouched every penny out of him, he was still a few bucks short on a couple-hundred-dollar item LOL.
2). I stopped offering to deliver after a few years ago my dad drove a CRT TV across the city to some "poor" lady, who started getting all weird when he took the TV upstairs to her place.

I emailed on an ad that said make offer. I did research before I emailed but found no MSRP. I thought maybe 20.00 would be a place to start. He/she quickly emailed me back and said it was 400.00 new. That's it.

I emailed back and said, edit your listing to state that and maybe even add what the least you will take also.

    He/she still hasn't edited his/her ad.

    I won't pay 200.00+ or so if that's what they're expecting.
Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.
