MM6501s and OS US AMP 4300x passive or active?

Hello,

So, I have been running my MM6501s off of a older blaupunkt amp that claimed to put out 300x2 bridged at 4ohms, anyways it worked well for about 1-2 songs cranked then I can hear the distortion start to come when it would start to go into thermal protection mode.

Anyways I acquired a older Made in Florida US amp 4300X. Specs are 75x4 or 180x2. Have read a lot about it being underrated a lot. So, wondering if you guys think I should just run it with the MM crossover and leave it or should I go active. Only thing I'm concerned about about active is not having enough power.

Any thoughts?

You get more power when you run active.

Yeah but how much more, even if the amp is underrated I dont see it being more the 90x4. Is that enough to run it active? Rather not go through running more wire to find out its not.

You are confusing me. Why would running 90W into the passive crossover losing 30% to 40% and then only giving the woofer and tweeter a combined 60W be ok but you are worried that sending 90W to the woofer while active won't be? Theoretically you can get double the power by going active but more realistically you can probably get 30% to 40% more.

    Going active gives you:
    (1) More power to the components
    (2) Better control by adjusting crossovers and slopes if available
    (3) Better control of the components -the amp can control the drivers. when you have a passive crossover any damping that the amp could provide is completely negated.

Bottom line is it is way better.

Guess I will be running some tweeter speaker wire this weekend if the weathers nice then.

Should be last question, Heres my amps manual:
www.reaudio.com/documents/collection[2001].pdf#page=17" should link to page 17.

Either way it looks like I wont be able to cross the tweeters over on the amp since it looks like it only go as high as 500hz, which I'm guessing is way to low for a tweeter.

    or am I totally wrong?

    I wouldn't cross any lower than 3kHz.
