Usually 2.4Ghz is the frequency for the wifi signal. But there are some 5Ghz signals now. So it would be best if you could check which frequency you need. Several questions come to mind. Does this need to be an antenna that connects directly to your laptop or xbox? You will need to match the connectors and they might be different between the two devices. Powered or unpowered antenna? ethernet connection, then you might need an access point and antenna. Could also look at wireless amplifiers.

Imagine sitting in a hotel with crappy wifi signal.I'm wondering if there is an amplifier for lack of a better term that would grab the signal and then give me a better signal thru the "amplifier.
I guess getting a usb antenna would be about all i could do.

You can get a range extender/wireless repeater.... Even cheaper routers now have this function for less than $35

I like getting a router with the functions rather than a specific repeater because you get a hub with it if you want to connect things with an Ethernet cable.

You can DIY a directional antenna, just google it. Or buy one. For that to work, you need to be in a situation where you can actually pinpoint where the signal is coming from.

Plan B: cat-5 is cheap. Buy a roll and just temporarily run a line (assuming this isn't a stealing-from-the-neighbors kinda party).
