Which is better for me? I do both Stereo listening and play Blurays.
My main method of connection is PC---optical cable--->AVR
-The Marantz is priced at $400 and the Onkyo at $250.
-If the Marantz wasn't so old (2001) I would go for it.
-The Onkyo is a 2009 Model and cheaper.
My setup is 2x Montor 70's(F), 2x Monitor 60's (R), CS2 (C)
PSW505 and a Sony 10"
Thanks! All input welcome

Based on the information provided, get the Onkyo.

If you're going to ALSO use a Blu-ray player, in addition to the PC. Then you WILL need HDMI connections so Onkyo it is. Although the Marantz might have better sound for music? I don't know that unit but many Marantz receivers are fairly musical and the Onkyo a bit more neutral on that score. But the Onkyo has the processing you need for newer HD surround formats on the newer discs..

The marantz is just so much of a better quality gear I have a hard time selecting the onkyo over the marantz. The amp section and all around build quality just does not compare. If you are using an optical input that means everything you transfer will be 2ch only, which means hdmi is not needed in your case. Also, the marantz has 7.1 ch analog inputs, so if you get a blu-ray player with 7.1 analog out, you can actually do the decoding audio of movies at the br player level and feed the video through hdmi directly into the tv.
I don't know, this is a tough call....Living Room 7.1 HT Rig:

I get multi-channel sound through optical... and most of my blurays are saved as files on my computer, so I rarely usemy PS3 as a bluray player. This really is a tough choice. AHH!
"Optical is limited to legacy DD 5.1 and DTS. For PCM, it is limited to stereo."
DTS is what I use for listening to HD audio and it sounds great. -
Not familiar with that model of Marantz but had the Onkyo TX-NR807. That it didn't have multi-channel analog inputs and that you could've cooked an egg on top of it after about 30 minutes of use turned out to be the deal breaker. My Onkyo TX-SR805 runs much, much cooler.

The 805 is the "superior" amp, hands down. It lags behind in video processing. But "who" actually uses receivers for that? I don't.
In a way the 805 was an anomaly that I am SURE Onkyo lost "money" on! Hence the reconfiguration of 806, 7, 8, 9, etc. We may "never" see the value of an 805 again! Not that the newer 80Xs are bad. They're just not 51 lbs of sonic goodness!

Well I'm glad that I now know the 805 was the best of the 800 series, But unfortunately, that isn't one of my options. I listen to alot of FLAC's also so it is important that I make the best decision possible.
