I like the end of Pulse, crash scene in flight of the Phoenix, and how to train your dragon for bass movies. Transformers 3 is top notch for all things, great surround fx.

I wouldn't use a movie unless its multi-channel testing you are referring to. In that case, any movie you are familiar with that has good range of sounds. For typical "testing" I used Blade 2 (DTS), the opening vampire killing scene. For demonstration I used Master and Commander (DTS), the first battle scene.

If I were testing to determine whether I was interested in the speaker for purchase, I would collect a handful of songs of different types that I am intimately familiar with and go from there.
Do you hear that buzzing noise?

Definitely some good references listed here.

I pull out Tron Legacy to show off the Empire.

Just picked up Ghost Protocol, that gave the system a good work out.

I use the Blu-Ray versions of 'Master and Commander' and 'Saving Private Ryan'.

Both are good for testing a new system as well as checking everything out after you've made some changes and/or moved some speakers around and have re-calibrated your receiver.

Well, you want a movie with a good variety of sounds, plenty of them out there, but more importantly you want to make sure the movie is encoded in 5.1 or 7.1 depending on the number of channels you are trying to test. If you want to test 7.1, make sure you pick a true 7.1 movie.

    Go here:
    http://www.blu-raystats.com/Stats/TechStats.php

And under "Audio" select the channels you want the movie to have and a filtered list will come up.

I remember Prince of Persia being an awesome surround experience with arrows flying through the room. This movie is 5.1 only though.

    Have fun

Star Wars version 83.12.00..LOL The THX intro alone should make you cry with how powerful it sounds.

    My rig:
Polk LS 90(Left front, Right front)
    Polk LS 350 Center
    Polk LS/fx surround
    Polk PSW 505 Sub
    Conrad Johnson PRE
    Mark Levinson Mono Blocks X5
    Sony Blu Ray

I know it sounds like overkill but it is soo good.

Also have a pair of Acoustat 2=2s
    Magnapans
    Logan Martins
and on and on but my point is get the NEW Blu ray Star Wars and just replay the THX opening credit about 10 times till you melt. DC

There is no better test of a speakers full capability using movie sound tracks then those composed and conducted by Joe Hisaishi. Of all of his exquisite soundtracks Princess Mononoke (Mononoke-hime 1997) is my pick for a single OST. There are three themes, Track 11,Lady Eboshi, track 14, The Young Man From The East, Prince Ashitaka's theme, and Track 18, Nobody knows your Heart, The Princess Mononoke Theme. To get the best OST you have to have the Japanese release it is superior to the American release which is missing half of the original tracks. I picked the Japanese movie poster because it shows San, aka Princess Mononoke. That is not badly smeared lip stick on her face but blood San sucked from a gun shot wound suffered by her mother the giant wolf goddess Moro.

Agreed on LOTR. The battle scene in RotK with the Oliphaunts is a great sub test; you should be able to *feel* that one!

I also agree on WotW. This is another great test of your subwoofer's capabilities, however, it also really puts the tweeters to the test.

That scene from House of the Flying Daggers is probably my favorite for testing/showing off the capabilities of a good surround system.

Just saw Bram Strokers Dracula, creepy movie but awesome sound track in uncompressed. It was kinda of comical to see Gary Oldman as Drac after seeing him in the Cristian Bale Batman movies. Of course, Oldman does a great job in Fifth Element which also has a great sound track.
