What is Wrong with the MW 6503 driver?

I finally figured out the two 6 1/2 inch drivers (MW-6503 on my non-speaking 10B are bad. I put this speaker model in the search engine on this forum and ran across a number of flame wars about MW-6503, "you need to get the original speaker for the 10B the MW-6503 is a bad replacement". I am somewhat puzzled by this the speakers on my 10B's which I purchased new in 1989 have a pair of MW-6503's made in 1988 what am I missing. I understand Polk Audio still has this driver, if there is a better replacement I'll get that one.

I believe they are talking about replacing the MW-6503 with say an MW-6501, etc. Polk does make replacement MW-6503's and you can buy them from them direct with free shipping and I believe $48.00, but it's been a number of years since I purchased a driver from Polk. Some people say the original drivers are the ones to get as they are made better. I will leave that one up to you and searching the forums to decide on. I would absolutely saty with the MW-6503 as these are the original drivers that came with your monitor 10B's. Don't bother getting a different MW-XXXX driver. Hope this helps you out.

Thank you, and that is just what I will do. All I have left to do on these old 10B's are these two drivers and I am going to up grade the low pass inductors. the Cap's and resistors have upgraded. After I started this thread I learned the whole argument was trying to use the 6503 on another Polk speaker that used something else and the crossover on that model was not designed for the 6503 so it sounded different.

The new 6503 will not be a prefect match cosmetically for the original 6503 MW. The leads are not exposed on the front of the driver like the old ones. see photos

Also, make sure to trim the rubber surround on the new 6503 to open the screw holes like the one pictured above. Otherwise, you may mess up the rubber surround when you tighten the screws.

The fact the coil leads do not poke through is a good thing that will eliminate a potential weak point in the cone. Skrol good tip and I have a hole punch that will do the job neatly.
