My wife has an interior decorator friend who gives her suggestions all the time. I set up my 3.1's in the living room and she happened to see them yesterday. She made a comment that made me feel like I'd been kicked in the privies........."They're not very pretty, can you paint them?" I was shocked!!

Wow! Really? I happen to think that 3.1's are the best looking of the tl's. I have the 1.2tl's and have been waiting for a pair of 3.1's to come up for sale locally. Your 3.1's are exactly the color of finish that I'm looking for too. Those are some gorgeous speakers that you have there. Did you purchase these recently? There was an equally nice set for sale on Craigs in the Portland area recently. I really debated purchasing them.

Good for you! I could tell that those were in exceptional condition from the pics on Craigs.

You wouldn't happen to have access to a scanner? I've been wanting a copy of the tl owners manual and I know that those speakers came with one.

Here is the link if anyone wants the SDA manual - page 2 looks bad, but was supposed to be blank anyway, and the last page is upside down (it was just the polk mailing address anyway)

It's possible to dress them up without those ratty things on top of the speakers.

Look into replacing the endcaps and sides with fancy wood...or just veneer them with something exotic.

Some people do strange things with their SDAs. Wonder what they would look like with a wig and an evening dress? Bet they would be pretty.

    noted -

these are not in their permanent position.......the wife and her "assistant" are trying to figure out where they belong - They want to put them in the corner beside and behind the sofa and I've fought them off for now, so here they stay until the decision. Trust me, "they" don't like the wires either.

Personally I don't think the 3.1tl's are a great looking speaker. Replacing the end caps are a pain in the **** as they are not easy to take off and the side strips are ugly as hell, they look like a base board for your house..

Back to the end caps and the cabinet. The end caps are part of the cabinet they are not like the other SDA's that are either glued and stapled or bolted..

Now I might not find them as attractive as some of the other SDA's but I do find them as one of the better sounding SDA's..

    C-Dirt,
I have to agree with Tool on this one, no amount of dressing those turds up will help. It would be like putting nice rims and tires on a Pinto Station Wagon and expecting it to be cover page material. Ain't going to happen.
You may not know this, but the SDA effect is a gimmick. Pure and simple. Even if it were real, the necessary set up is so time consuming and technical that you end up resenting them. Not only do you have to space them just so, with no toe in, you are limited to certain types of amplifiers!! It's like chasing dragons and unicorns.
Here is what you should do, give in to the wife and her friend and put them up for sale. Preferably by PM to me and I will make sure that you are able to get something that is easier to implement into the decor and will actually sound good.
I could arrange pickup just let me know when is a good day.

The way they are set up right now, you'll get a 'sun-spot' on the the left side of the right speaker.

I live in Portland - the sun never shines................although the day the pic was taken was brighter than usual.....luckily it clouded right up and continued raining.
