...they vary in price from $5.00 and up. I have a 500gig SATA 2.5" drive I want to use as an external. I take it metal is better to disperse heat. Any recommendations on a reasonably priced enclosure? What are the main differences?

Doesnt matter, look for one that is USB 2 or ESATA capable and your fine. You just reminded me I have a couple in my apartment I need to sell lol...."....not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." ...does a 500gig drive generate more heat? I have used a few of the cheaper enclosures on 60-120gig drives without a problem. I just don't want to fry a 500gig drive , now, with prices like they are.

I like Rosewill's eSATA/USB enclosures, but they're all about the same. I wouldn't worry too much about a 2.5" drive generating too much heat. They do well in laptops, and many of them have very poor ventilation around the HD. An aluminum external enclosure will heatsink the drive for better cooling than what many of them are getting in laptops.
I personally don't run any external drives 100% of the time though--I consider them "part-time" drives because they don't have air being circulated around them as they would in a desktop case.2.1: PC>Schiit Gungnir MB>Schiit Freya Noval>NAD C-270>Ascend Acoustics Sierra-1, HSU STF-2 5.1: HDMI Bitstream>Denon AVR-1910>polkaudio RTE55, CS350-LS, RT3, HSU STF-2, Visio M55-F0
