Different sources, different volumes

On the HK...

I have the TT hooked into the phono input.
I have the dvd audio hooked into the video 2 input.
I have the cable box audio hooked into the video 3 input.
I have the squeezebox hooked into the digital coaxial connection.

Nothing is hooked into the cd or the video 1 input, however, when I select either...the squeezebox plays. (It seems weird that the sqeezebox plays when video 1 is selected, but maybe the digital coax overrides both the cd and video 1 input?)

My issue is...

To acheive the similar volume levels across the inputs, I have to turn the receiver up and down between each one. Here is an approximation of the dB for each one.

Phono = -30
DVD = -30
Cable Box = -10
Squeezebox = -40

I don't mind changing volumes between the inputs, but to hear any music through the tv, I have to turn the cable box input up so much it just seems like something is wrong.

It's liveable, but any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Paul

    Your input issue is strange, something wrong with the HK? As far as varying input source levels, this is pretty common. Cable TV/Sat TV boxes commonly run at ower output than most hi-fi sources or DVD/BR players.

    What input do you select to hear the coax digital input normally?

    You only have a coax coming from the SQB right? NO analog RCA connections made correct?

    Correct, coax only...no rca from the sqb.

    I use the CD option to listen to the sqb.

    Is there any way to boost the output from the cable box. I just doen't seem like I should have to crank it so much.

    Yes, every source will be a different output level since not every source ouputs the exact same voltage. Why is this an issue? Many cd's and digital music files are recorded at different levels and play at different volumes when the vol knob is stationary. It's pretty standard and why people like a remote control.

    For Video 1, did you set the connection to analog using the instruction on page 24 of the manual?

    Make sure that cable box does not have a volume setting. If it does, you probably want to set it to its max. Does your cable box not have a digital output?

    Nope, unless for some very odd reason it had a variable output control, but I doubt they are that sophisticated.

    I'm an idiot:redface:

    Any way to delete this thread so no one else sees it?

    Thank you nwohlford.

    I didn't realize each input could be set to coax, optical or analog.

    I had video 1 set to coax which solves that problem.

    I had video 3 set to optical. I changed it to analog and there we go.

    Thanks guys.

    You would be surprised at how useful these threads are for other people. I have been saved many times from asking a "stupid" questions by finding a thread where somebody else asked the same "stupid" question. It allows me to keep most of my idiocy to myself. Just imagine the service you are doing for others.

    Don't sweat it man, we all have been down that road.
    I like to make sure people realize that when you get a receiver, you have to set it up and that includes setting up the inputs. Not plug and play anymore like the old days. Heck, I can remember standing in front of a receiver once wondering why I wasn't hearing anything from a new cdp I just connected. Frickin' receiver wasn't turned on. Yeah....face palm.
