if i was to purchase these i would put them in a bedroom where the kids have grown n moved out. needing a little information weather to save my money or just buy them. im not a sony guy at all. maybe itll be waisting my money if there junk. looks can be different from a cell pic. are the old antique looking sonys a better quality than the newer ones. not sure ive ever owned a sony before...

Pics would help. Or at least a model number.
There are some older Sonys that are actually very good, but "only" a few! There are a number of people here who could identify them.

I would not buy that old speakers. if you are going to use them on your living room, get some nice Polk Rti speakers and you will be happier for sure!Make it simple...Make it better!

I wouldn't bother with those. They're what people often call "kabuki speakers", see quote:
""Kabuki Speaker = Japanese made speakers from the 60's through the 70's that had a minimum 15" woofer, a minimum 4-way cross-over, at least 6 individual drivers, in a box that is less than 3 cu ft or weighs less than 50lb's.
For those wondering about the origin of the term, it had to do with the limited bandwidth and tinny sound that chracterized the first versions of these speakers. As a friend said "You can play Led Zepplin though them and it comes out sounding like Kabuki music".

So - referring to 1970s loudspeakers as "antique" just makes me feel old :-)
Strictly FYI, Sony - perhaps more than any of the other Japanese massmarket consumer electronics brands, made an astonishing array of poor to lacklustre loudspeakers... with a couple of "statement" pieces thrown in. Generally speaking, ALL of the Japanese brands made some good loudspeakers, but these were very seldom imported into the US. The Japanese market was (and is) far pickier about the quality of loudspeakers than is the US market (or at least, so the Japanese electronics giants seem to assume).
For example, most 'murricans would think of something like this when they though about "Pioneer speakers"...
or even this :-P
But Pioneer also made this...
(but don't look for those at your local Best Buy or Walmart...)
There's a great Japanese website that gives us in the ROW (rest of the world) some insight into the Japanese products that didn't make it to the US's shores. www.audio-heritage.jp

thanks again. i looked there still on there too. they were 100.00 in mint condition from what the email said. but ive never owned a sony speaker. i owned a set of old kenwoods for years. they were 300 watt and i cant remember any more info. i sold them. later i wished i hadnt. they never failed me. they were 70's model. i did a porch job n i saw them. the guy gave them to me as it interested me so much,as i was born in the early 60's. so old things i seem to be attracted to old speakers......

cant wait till the kidos get out of college so i can have fun. then now the grandchildren from oldest. i guess it never ends..

Good thing you didn't get them. I don't remember any Japanese speakers of the time being worth a damn. They looked incredible with woofers the size of manhole covers but an AR speaker 1/5 the size blew them away.Radio Station W7ITC

The Technics SB 7000 series was not bad.
