I have a HK254 with preouts and a zone 2 option. There are zone 2 preouts as well. Would it be a bad idea to connect these preouts to a 2 channel amp for my new LSI's and keep a 5.1 setup for the HT? I know this is not the best option but it is what I have at the moment.

opinions?

I don't see why not, the only downside I can tell is the zone 2 usually needs analog connections. In other words, if you plan on playing a cdp, I believe it has to be connected by the analog connections. Also, and this depends on receivers, bass management may also be an issue for zone 2. Check your manual, as receivers vary on the capabilities in different zones.

I have the same option here to.My Yamaha has zone 2 which right now I'm using for the Bose 601s and yes you do need an analog connection but for what ever reason my dock and i-pod,and tuner work just fine on zn 2. I just won a Niles 6zone speaker selector on the bay so both the Bose and Infinitys will be powered by the Adcom which will free up the Yamaha for someting else like some small bookies for the dining room.I found that there was functionally nothing wrong w/ using zone 2 w/ the exception that you had to shut down the avr then slide the switch over to zn. 2 then turn it back on.
