Just reading on the interweb that the 70th anniversary is coming up on Wednesday. There's no argument that war is ugly, but if you read about these men and don't appreciate their meddle then there's something wrong with you.

    Mettle. Hot airplane the B-25.

"We may have been sighted, we have to launch now."

"But we don't have enough fuel to reach the post-strike bases. We'll have to crash land or ditch the airplanes!"

"Yeah I know. I'll see you there."

Damn it. I know I should have double checked that spelling.

My grandfather was in a squadron that had B-25s. He was in intelligence, had some great pictures. One of my favorites was a row of about a dozen P-51s with Flying Tiger markings. Also had shots of bomb sights from the wing mount cameras. Good stuff.

Love the look of the B-25's - one of the most elegant looking planes of the war, though not the best. The History Channel has a great program on the Doolittle raid, with lots of footage, interviews with surviving crew members.

As for fighters, love the P51 Mustang, "the Cadillac of the skies" (anybody remember this line from "Empire of the Sun"?) When Goering saw those over Berlin he knew the war was lost.

Partial to the Chance Vought Corsair too. That was a bad looking scooter with those inverted wings.

Great video, Shack. Those planes just seemed to hang in air after they left the flight deck on takeoff. Didn't realize how small the carriers were compared to the size of the bombers, either.

The Doolittle raid was the first ray of hope we had that the Pacific war could be won, but then fell to being a bit of a joke and a war footnote in some circles, the punchline being that the Doolittle raid "Did Little"(I was taught this in school!). The truth is that it altered the outcome of the war, forcing the Japanese to consider defense of the homeland before anything else. They began to bring soldiers home to protect Japan itself and were slow to resupply and fortify their positions, thinking the US was already capable of winning the war rather quickly. There were several in the Japanese command that knew the war was over the day those B-25's took to the sky, and every man that took those rides deserves a place of honor in the history of military aviation.
