Anybody into recording in Pro Tools?

I'm looking for advice. It's been 3-4 years since I've been into recording and so much has changed. Pro Tools 10 isn't hardware specific anymore which I thought would never happen.
I was given an old school Digidesign 002R and I'm wondering if it's even relevant anymore with Pro Tools 10 (I'm on a PC). If it is, I'm wondering how I can use it to it's full potential. I know I want to bypass the 002R's preamps and run some type of product through SPDIF to be able to use an external pre to its full potential. I just have no idea what's out there anymore and how to go about configuring something like this. As you may know, using any of the 1/4" or XLR inputs on the 002R to run an external pre would be spinning my wheels because you can't bypass the built in pres. It would be a external pre into the 002R's pre.
I see products like the DigiMax D8 (here) but that would just be giving me an extra 8 channels and not allowing me to work in my own external pre with going through it's own pres (sorry to be confusing)? I have a UA S-610 (here) that I want to be able to use.
Anyway, maybe a long shot but hopefully one of you is into it. Thanks gents.
