thsmith,my youngest son is 30 now, he's enjoying this as much as I am.I hope he buys a bigger house than I have, these will be his one day.How about a half inflated air mattress to put under them or would that be to much bounce?

Just be sure and lay them on their backs when transporting. I bought my current 1C's at local Polkfest which was about 150 miles away. I bought them on the spot as I had no intention of purchasing anything. Luckily another Polkie Doug (dkg999) drove his truck down which had a covered bed. We loaded them in, laying them flat and drove them back on the highway without incident. If you are really worried you could pull the drivers out. The worst scenario is the magnets could possible shift which is much less likely if they are lying flat. A

As far as the air mattress, not sure on that. Too much bouncy bounce could cause the same issues. Don't lay them on their sides for transport.

When I bought my SDA 2.3TL's last June I carefully measured the back of my Escape (with the seats folded down). I had like 3 inches to spare side to side, and about the same front to back.

I brought a couple of small pillows and blankets, laid them on their back and put the blankets between them so they wouldn't bang together. Then I put a pillow underneath each one a little closer to the top of the speaker than midway, to keep the binding posts from getting knocked around.

Had a 4 hour trip home on the interstate without any issues. Tony, the seller, helped me load, but I unloaded by myself. Thank God for gravity and folding hand trucks?

If I understand correctly you're gonna be hauling these in a p/u truck? I'd bring along a tarp to cover them and keep 'em out of the sun.

Good luck OFD, and post your impressions when you've spent some time with them! I think you'll really like them.

Ain't it funny how 1 upgrade (Belles Amp) always leads to others?

Most folks find that 6 to 8 inches from the back wall (basically flat against the wall) works for them. SDA's produce better bass closer to the back wall, but too close and the bass gets boomy. The distance between making it or breaking it can be as little as half an inch. The bass falls off dramatically the further out from the back wall they get.

I think most folks would find 12 to 14 inches too far out, but there may be some room anomalies where that distance may work. Remember, every room is different.

Most folks find that 6 to 8 feet apart works best. Using that as a guide, the minimum wall length works out to be 15 feet. With a 13 foot wall, you'll have to play a bit with the distance between the cabinets and the distance from the side walls to find the best balance.

F1 is spot on. 6-8 inches out, 6 to 8 ft apart and 3ft from each side wall. Adjust based on what produes the best sound in your room. 1C's are amazing but you aint heard anything until you get good caps and resistors on them and get them spiked.

Listen to them placing your ear over each driver checking for sound.

pushing lightly in on MW to see if there is any rubbing sound, if so magnet has shifted.

Good visual inspection of each speaker.

Listening will be your best test.

Other than the push test, check the surrounds of the drivers very carefully (bring a flashlight). If the speakers were stored improperly, or abused somehow, they might have holes/rips in the surround material. If those holes/rips are bad enough, the push test will reveal it because the drivers won't come out, or won't stay out very long. However, your drivers could be perfect, and the cabinet is just losing pressure around the binding post cup, or the cabinet itself isn't sealed very well. Cabinet pressure is critical for the passives to work optimally.

Additionally, make sure you listen to each tweeter individually. If they were used with poor amplification and by someone who likes to crank them, they could easily be blown.

    Good luck!

OK to be honest i got tired of reading all of the bantering and just skipped to the end. This being said i am not entirely sure of what has transpired throughout the entire thread.

I own the 2A's 1C's and SRS's and I like the 1C's the least and give them very little listening time. I keep going back to them from time to time to try to wrap my head around why this is the case. The 2A's (of the models I own) sound best to me by far. However I keep wondering why because there are so many on here that love the 1C's. I would recommend that you get what you can as far as model. These are getting harder to come by and you never know when you will have another chance to own SDA's. Though i am currently not a fan of the 1C's i am definitely a fan of the SDA's. I doubt if many (maybe not any) have perfect rooms for these speakers unless they built the room for the speakers. i have used my 2A's in several rooms; 16x27, 16x12.5 and 12.5x11 and they sound great in all of them. They do sound different in all of them and setup was different in all rooms. Same with the 1C's and the SRS's i have tried in the 12.5x16 room and the 16x27 room. They too sound great in both. naturally much better in the larger of the 2. My point is we all work with what we have (bless our wives hearts). get the SDA's that you can and work with the arrangement in your room/s. it may not be as good as placement in someone else's room (or it may be better) but I'll bet you will get them to where you can enjoy the SDA effect. Enjoy!

Hello Mr Smith,Audio Alan,Pictures are here.
    http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?131597-POLK-SDA-1C-in-SF-Bay-Area-400
Post 6 shows pictures,I haven't taken any yet.I will follow up later with more in my house. After listening all day yesterday I'm still at the WoW stage, I cant believe how they fill the room.I have them set up 8 inches away from the wall and about 8 feet between them.I still have some tweaking to do with them but not much.My sofa sits 10 feet away so there's a nice sweet spot right in the center of the sofa.As far as upgrades go they have the 194 tweeters and have been sealed with mortite and dampened with insulation, for now im just going to enjoy them.Crossovers will be done when budget allows. And the best part was my son picking them up and and taking them down stairs to the truck by himself as Dad watched.
