505 On The Way

Have been slowly upgrading the bedroom system with budget pieces. Recent Pioneer 821, refurbed Sony BDP with built-in WiFi and now replacing the (actually have 2) PSW111 with the 505. Never heard one but if you believe all the on-line reviews our next door neighbors should offer to buy it within a day or two.

Heck, I don't even know if it's an upgrade over the 111 (s), but we're going to find out. Other speakers are Monitor 40s (front) and 30s (rear) along with the CS1 center.

I wonder if Polk still builds these 505s or is it possible that whatever is out there is still from "new new old stock?"

Decent price at Newegg today and a guy at work is taking the 2 111s. This should be it for a while or untill I decide what to do with the 5.1 Martin Logan MLTs sitting in their unopened box in the guest room.

Guess this never stops ...

I would stack the 111's and place the 505 at the other location. And use a spl meter to set it up.
    Absolute corruption empowers absolutely.

Have those 111s stacked now but only powering one. No room for "more stuff" in the room. Wife's hoping for a net reduction and whatever she wants ...

Still curious about where all these 505s come from. Does Polk manufature products for specific retailers such as Newegg? re the 505, Monitor IIs, etc?

Alright! The 505 is in place and kickin! So far, I've listened to a Bob James and Chris Rea CD and thought the bass tones were warm and clean. Started out with the volume control (LFE utilized) at 50% but after running the manual speaker setup program on the receiver found that somewhere around 30% delivered what I wanted and IF my ears are as good as I think they are, made for a nice level exchange between the sub and the fronts with the crossover at 80 and the fronts set to small.

Was a bit surprised at the punchy (fast) music response with which it performed though most of the reviews around the web credited this to the speaker. Could definitely increase volume to where its warmth turned to darkened goo. No worries, I prefer my subs to augment what's happening when listening to music, not pollute.

Will definitely try a movie this weekend. Unlike the Velodyne in the living room, this sub has no remote to switch between music and movie modes. So unless something really makes an impression, I'll likely stay with the music-preferred settings and live with however that works for movies.

So far, agree with most of what has been written ... that the 505 is a good value and plays well with others in its own age (price) group.

Have now watched Prince of Persia and Independence Day on the bedroom system and have not changed my mind about the 505. I find it as advertised - a good bang for the buck and much more effective than the PSW111s were in this system. At $200 it is a great match for my Polk Monitors (40s and 30s w CS1) and you can count me as pleased.
