I have a 5.1 lsi system with 9's, c, and f/x. I love the sound but the center just seems to be softer than the rest of the system and I have tried running it hot or increasing the treble and it doesn't seem to sound right. Any way to get a little more performance from the center through crossover mods? I've also considered running dual centers or I've also read about people running another 9 as the center. Any ideas or anyone tried different options and could offer some pros/cons of them?

Additional note. Currently running off a pioneer elite receiver with no external amp......I know..... I'm going to get an amp at some point but just wondered if anything else I could do in the meantime.

I would run the auto calibration if you havent already. If you have, I would start messing with it to see what you can do with regards to the crossovers.

Also where it the center located, is it wall mounted, etc.

I've got mine wall mounted, they need to be at ear level. Get an amp on it ASAP, you'll be much happier. I've got a modded C, and I'm very happy with it, but, placement was key. Otherwise, ES also gives some solid advice above.

I've got it mounted below my screen which is probably about 12 inches below ear height on the second row and about dead on for the first row. Calibration was run but I don't think I've run it since I moved the couches so I'll try running it again. I played around with my settings a bit more tonight and I definitely think it's something I've got set on the receiver that is making it sound weird. I'll have to mess with it some more when the wife isn't around. She hates all the sounds audyssey makes when it's leveling things.

Just go into the menu and manually adjust the settings/speaker levels to your liking. The calibration doesn't always get it right anyway.

That's how I have mine with I think +1.0dB and it works great. Blends nicely with the LSi9 fronts.

Hopefully your lsic is set to small and you are running it at 80hz or higher crossover. Especially because you don't have an external amp you have to take the unnecessary load off the speaker so that it can do a better job playing a smaller range of frequencies. Set the crossover at100hz or 120hz and see how that changes things.

I have found that it takes a lot of power for the center to sound clean and clear when set to large. Even for the cs2. And location matters too, but yours sounds to be in a pretty good spot.

I'm pretty sure it is set to small but I haven't messed with any of the frequency settings yet. I'll try that next. I want to get proper power on it at some point but my home theater budget has been cut off until the home remodel is done.

check connections for phase. My wife wanted to dust under my center once and when she moved it she pulled out speaker connections. When she stuck them back in she reversed phase. Until I ran my room correction and it came back with CC out of phase did she then say "Oh yea those thingies fell out one day".....

Then set it to large and see what happens. You have to try different settings to find out what works best. Generally, centers are for dialogue, and do not have explosions being sent to the center.

That's my experience. When I ran the auto calibration on my AVR and used those settings I could almost never hear the surround or front L-R mains. I did a manual set up, and it's much better.

Messed with the settings last night and decided to start over. So I did a full reset on the receiver to clear out all the settings, set all the speakers to small, set the speaker distance manually, and then left everything else alone. Vast improvement. Not sure if my room is weird or something but auto-cal seems to make it sound weird. I just set my rears to +2 and my center to +1 and now everything blends perfectly.

I have never had any luck with auto calibration either. After auto cal my center is never loud enough and i can't hear the surrounds at all. So I also had to do it on my own. Glad you figured it out.

I knw what your saying. I always auto cal then bust out the SPL meter, I feel like I can get it dialed in great with a little help from the meter.

Thanks me too. Now I just gotta seal the amp plate on my subwoofer so it stops whistling on heavy bass in movies. Then start saving up for an amp to relieve my poor receiver.
