Job searching is very depressing

Been applying for new jobs all around my area, even going so far as to add an hour commute (both ways) for a possible lead. I've been at this for a few months now, and I've had several interviews...but since I don't have any formal education, I never get that second interview.

Just a tad bit frustrating.

Luckily I currently have a job, although it's in the educational sector, so even that is on the chopping block come budget time this year.

Some fields are STARVING for people. I'm sure it's relative to where you are in North America.

I've been in the Security field for almost 8 years and they are crying for people left, right and center. Good people with common sense are so hard to find.

I've been tossing around a possible career change myself.

Keep your head up. A lot of times when you least expect something good things can come your way.

I know how you feel though. I'm also currently employed but looking to get a job in the field I want. I wish I could do something with a 1 hour drive but its not possible and have been having to look at moving a lot farther away.

Good luck and I hope you find what you are looking for. Formal education doesn't mean everything. I know far too many people that went to school to do something then when asked how to do it have no clue.

Run for government! Apparently you don't need an education to do it, and it pays well!

I feel for you, Jes has been looking since November or so, and hasen't gotten one interview or rejection letter. The big one we hoped she got, she didn't. She has the required license, 3x degrees, but no experience in it. They hired a man without a license, and a GED, what an ol' boys network. Good luck, we've got some tough times ahead as they are taking away her unemployment this week.

Don't just apply for the job, actually ask for it. Show them you mean business.

One of the better decisions I made in life was at 34, I decided to go to college. I sold my car, busted my a$$, and got a Computer Science degree in 3 1/2 years. I could have done it quicker but I took one summer off. Anyway, aside from losing my girlfriend (who got all my stereo gear, including my immaculate albums) it has worked out great. Of course, I haven't lucked out and worked for the right startup and made millions, but it gives me the dinero to buy stereo gear.

I would second going back for higher education. I am 41 and doing it now, though I have been a stay at home dad for the past 12 years. Some teachers can be a good source of employment options assuming you do well and participate.

I'm planning on starting community college in the Fall, and working towards a 4-year transfer degree.

But I've been planning on doing this for a few years now, so who knows?
