what is the diffrence between a sub that is ported and another one that is not? sound, performance?
Main System:
Denon AVR-2805, Polk Audio RTi70's, Polk Audio CSi40, Polk Audio FXi50, Paradigm PW-2200 v.2, Toshiba 42XV545U HDTV

Second System:
Denon AVR-1705, Polk Audio R40, Polk Audio CS245i, Polk Audio R15, Paradigm PS-1200a

    try searching the forum for this question, id answer it but i have no idea how to. i only know what fr graphs should look like for each different subs. sorry i cant help more, maybe if doc sees it he will help. try searching the internet

    In general terms, ported sub will provide louder bass with the same power from the amp. On the other hand, sealed sub is more accurate and has faster cone movement, but the sealed sub also require a more powerful amp to produce the same spl as the ported sub. I have an Atlantic Technology T70 sub. It's a sealed design and is very good for music (especially techno, where the bass is fast and strong and will overwhelm the "one-notey" subs).

    I think the acoustic suspension subs are a little tighter too. Both have their advantages and both types can have good bass effects. I like a bit smaller(10")sub for my room as its only 20X12. I think the 10" can react faster and produce a "better" bass effect in a smaller room like mine and not be so boomy. I also have the Atlantic Technology T70 Sub(great buy new at $179)its a acoustic suspension front firing sub and is really nice. On ebay you can also find for around $175 a Cambridge Sound Works Basscube 12 its a 12" Acoustic Suspension Sub and I would have had that if this At T70 would not have come along.

    Ported has a blow hole, and the Sealed is Acoustic Suspension.

    Bass Reflex, Acoustic Suspension.

    A Bass reflex speakers takes away some bass accuracy for effeciency.

    So basically as said above, louder with less amp. It can be as accurate as a sealed IF done right. A 15-18 inch woofer can sound as good as a 10 inch woofer if it is of good quality. That is why some TOTL subwoofers are 18 inchers, like Velodyne.

    I prefer ported speakers, I like it loud..very loud...

    guess since the T70.1 is out now the good old T70 must not be good anymore :). I got that for $179 and a Kenwood VR-605 for $89. Sure its a factory Refurb but it works 100% and for those prices I got a nice set up now.
