really:confused: it means nothing? Why is it that it is only found on the high end receivers?

Agreed! Just a set of standards(whatever they may be) set by lucas ltd. Some quality companies don't even have their stuff tested. If you are into low end ht in a box, you might look for thx. Seeing that you are here on this site you are looking for quality and shouldn't worry about thx. On the other hand if it is stamped thx that doesn't mean it is garbage. IMO it is just a marketing technique. It is neither a format nor a specific sound.

    paymontana,

Makes sense, i guess. I'm somewhat new to this but have been exposed to it for about one year. Learning things about it everyday.

    Thanks

It is all the things the previous guys said, but it really means Tomlinson Holman's Xperiment. And that's a fact Jack.

There are benifits to using gear that is THX certified, but the certification does mean that it will out perform equipment that is not THX certified. Break out your granny glasses and get over to WWW.THX.com and read a little.

If that granny glasses comment was directed at me there Slick, stick it up your ****. Against my better judgement, I modified my response. Still don't think I was off base with it however. Strike ONE amigo.

lmao! Easy guys the granny glasses thing was just a joke. I'm sure of it. PM thinks if he got wacked in the head w/ a 60lb amp he would know what hi-fi is.

THX does mean something, i think its more then marketing.. unlike Monster cable.. although i use monster and THx cert receiver. however i didn't solely buy it for that. Its a set of standards to follow just like dolby digital, DTS, so on... doesnt mean its better, but it does add a few options in the dsp and bass mgt.. dept.. But what ever floats your boat, its there take it or leave it.. doesnt really matter

THX is a certification to a high level of quality. THX on you DVD provides you with test signals to adjust your monitor and test you speakers for proper placement and phase.

The name comes from lucas's first film THX-1138 a sci-fi classic filmed in the then new (1972) bart tunnels in San Francisco.
    It stared Robert Duval.

I would pay extra money for DTS support, but never for THX. It is simply another format, nothing more, nothing less.

It's not a *format*, just a certain set of standards.

I call standards in audio formats, like DD, DPL, etc....formats. Excuse the improper use of language.

The THX certification for speakers and subwoofers is ****. There are THX certified subs that perform like ****.

I have no idea how they got certified.........oh yes I do........they PAID THX for it.

The THX processing formats, are OTOH, worthy of some attention as they do affect SQ significantly when you enable them. Whether or not you like the SQ of the THX post processors and bass management stuff is a different story but there is quite a bit of thought at work on the electronics end of THX Ultra II.

Nothing you couldn't accomplish (probably better) with a decent parametric EQ and some sweat equity, though.

    WTF?!!

I make a comment that the orignal poster should, perhaps, check out the THX website for a little clarification regarding THX, and George rips me a new A-hole. Still don't know what crawled up his butt and died. I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for an apology.

Scott's comments were less than clear, I've got no idea what the hell he's saying.

If THX cert were worth there weight in GOLD than no other eqiupment would even sell. Saying that my Onkyo 898 is THX SELECT Cert and I am proud of that. My first Onkyo was the 787 was the FIRST cert THX reciever on the market. Now take a bow.
