Anyone running 9.1 yet or thinking about it.

I just went to 7.1 with my system & the difference vs 5.1 was more than I expected. It was a welcomed addition. Now, just thinking out loud here is that the next step would be 9.1 with the new presence/width channels that some manuf. are offering. Of course that means picking up a new AVR or processor to handle the task. Audyssey has their version & Yamaha gets hi praise for their presence & 3D audio enhancement for movies. It sounds gimmicky but hey if it expands your listening enjoyment, why not. I's all about having fun after all!!!

My Onkyo allows for 9.1 (or 9.2). About a month ago I set mine up to use my LSi9's as width (or front wide) channels, just because the speakers weren't being used since January and I wanted to see what it sounded like.
My daughter thinks it's cool, I suspect mainly because there's just more speakers hooked up; although it does give you several more processing options. Personally I think the room has to be fairly large and the placement of the speakers just right to justify the extra cost. BUT that's just my opinion.
I'll admit that if I was more serious about doing it right, I'd reconfigure the placement of my equipment and use smaller speakers for the extra front channels (as height channels).HT

I tried width channels and they didn't work in my room because of how widely spaced my mains are anyway. I'm running 9.2 with height channels, and it sounds amazing. I still think well-placed rear surrounds are more important than heights, but if you do the whole 9.1 setup, it is NICE.Equipment list:

I find its somewhat minimal over and above 7.1. I use small bookshelves over the TV. You notice them with soundtracks and other ambient sounds that would normally come out your fronts. I turn them up a little more than other channels otherwise if set flat, I hardly notice anything.

I'm holding out for a 15.8 system!!!!If you can't hear a difference, don't waste your money.

I have never tried 9.x but having gone to 7.1 and back to 5.1 makes me think there is not much *incremental" difference. The main reason I went back to 5.1 is that 3 years ago there were few titles encoded in 7.1 and I generaly found that matrixed sound into channels that are not natively encoded in the material has very minimal benefits. Not worth it in my view. There are now many more 7.1 titles available, and I'm actually planning to go back to 7.1. Now... If there were tons of titles encoded in 9.x I'd do it in a heartbeat.Living Room 7.1 HT Rig:

I remember watching the last terminaitor salvation movie and there are jets wizzing around that come from behind and wiz forward. Them height channels really gave alot of placement and overall was way more rewarding and fun during the entire movie

I think I've already addressed the "future" of surround formats in a long long ago, far far away post. The essence was that you're wasting you're time chasing Integers (5.1, 7.1/7.2, 9.1/9.2, 11.4....).
Because the future is Wall-to-floor-to-Ceiling MEMBRANE surround. You've probably heard that they can make drivers that look like a painting, right. So imagine all six surfaces in your room as 6 giant sound membranes that can play anything from 100Khz down to subsonic room shaking subfloor rattling 5-10hz. That's right all 6 surfaces are infinite baffle/ribbon drivers. No space left for any more speaker surface in your room anywhere. Beyond INTEGERS Full BODY surround. Shakes you, shakes your furniture. Heck your ceiling, walls and floor are all "vibrating".
Add Holographic TV and you have a modern day AV WOMB! That NO one would ever want to leave. All you need now is food and bathroom facilities built into your recliner! lol
Gentlemen, I present the MAN-WOMB!

I tried the 9.1 for a while with my Sunfire. I don't think my room is wide enough to make a big enough difference. It did look cool with all the speakers up front - 2-RTi12s and 2-RTi8s.
I don't think I will go back until I can do something like this ...

Did anyone see this guys room on tv ? There is a show called million dollar rooms and he was on it 2 or 3 weeks ago -
I'm thinking you multi-channel guys (I'm still dedicated to 2-channel / no sub) should just skip all of the middle ground and go straight to 27.3 . . .
. . . you know, basically a total-immersion system where you can almost fit a flat screen and a chair in the room with all of the gear/etc..VTL ST50 w/mods / RCA6L6GC / TlfnknECC801S

^ Funny!
I think a good 7.1/2 is way more than enough. Height channels would be fun but most data in a movie comes via the center channel , or least I thought so. I think the idea of running a dual center would be awesome versus height channels, especially for us guys running floor standing speakers.Shoot the jumper.....................BALLIN.............!!!!!

The biggest advantage to height channels for me is that it draws the sound up so the front soundstage sounds like it's coming from my projector screen instead of from below it, at least when using Audyssey DSX heights. It makes it sound more like the theater does, both in that respect and in drawing the sound from the surrounds up over you for ambient sound. In the theatrical space, this is done simply by the mixer placing out-of-phase information in the surrounds so it resolves generally above you, but this only works because of the vertical space theaters have. Even dipoles in the home don't really recreate that effect, so it's nice to be able to hear that in a smaller home theater space. And because height channels work based on existing mixing standards for ambient sound, they work on pretty much every modern 5.1/7.1 track out there.
Bottom line: It's cool if you have the space. I'm pretty damn happy with my setup.Equipment list:

Put the dipoles on their sides? There, problem solved. One side blasts into orbit the other reaches for you floor! lol
