Initial thoughts on KEF q900

Received the q900s today from accessories4less... Supposedly there were "slight cosmetic blemishes" which is why they are a little bit discounted, but I could none at all... In fact they appear to be brand new like you would pick them up at the store.

Listened to some music from a few less than stellar sources and even that sounded much better... It is quite detailed... You can clearly hear finger sweeps on the guitar... It also seems like they are playing to the whole room, filling it with sound...

Now on to Immortals bluray from redbox

I will add to the initial thoughts some more... I would like to spend some more time breaking them in first to give an official critique...

The looks of them are fairly plain.. they won't really win any fashion contests in that department. They are clean looking though and decently finished, and the drivers look nice if you run your speakers naked.

Listening to them in stereo set to large playing music, they have much more available bass then the m60s... Now before you say that its not even close to an apples to apples comparison, I am well aware of that but that is what they are replacing, so that's what I have to compare them to. Highs are pretty clear... After they break in I will spend some more time fine tuning the eq..

They performed well in the Immortals movie... Felt more like I was in a theater rather than at home with a decent sound system... There was a scene where some crows were chirping and I swear it was coming from the corner of the left front wall. It blends much better with the sub and hits the lower end with much more authority making for a smoother transition to the sub. I am still using the Polk cs2 for the center, so there is a bit of a noticeable difference in the speakers... Mainly in clarity. They do blend pretty well with the monitor 30s in the back..

The muddy vocals are gone with the q900s which is one of the main things I was looking for... I have noticed a couple of times during really loud low notes inthe movie where it might have been trying to dig a little too low and it might have been better to let the sub handle it. Keep in mind I have them set to large right now.. I will be playing with that in a bit, but for now I want to use their full range.

Sunday I have Captain America and War Horse to watch so that will give me a better idea how it performs in the HT department. I wish I had all the gear and high quality music library to properly test it with music.... But I am somewhat lacking in that department...

Good stuff...glad you're enjoying the 900's! They sure are sweet sounding & keep getting better & better. I just got done watching War Horse & it was incredible sounding. Ijust added the matching Q800 surrounds & they are an ideal match & rock the house as surrounds. As time & funds permit add the Q600 center & Q800 surrounds for an experience that will keep you happy for years to come. Try setting them to 60/80 hz small & let the sub handle what it does best, you won't be dissapointed. Congrats & enjoy!
