Does anyone know anything about HDCD compatible DVD players? Do they play DVD-As or SACDs? My roommate has a proscan DVD player that is HDCD capable and I can't figure out what the hell that means. Thanks for any help.

In September 2000, Microsoft Corporation acquired PMI. Microsoft continues to incorporate PMI's pioneering technology into offerings for the PC. This technology brings to Microsoft unique strengths in digital audio signal processing that are increasingly important as digital media becomes a primary source of entertainment.

I'm not trying to jack your thread, but I was thinking today that with all the consumer confusion (or lack of interest) with the SACD/DVD-A format war; I'd be willing to bet HDCD will begin to move into the limelight. They sound fantastic---now I'm the first to confess that I haven't listened to an SACD or DVD-A yet, but it's hard to imagine much more of an improvement over HDCD that would justify re-buying my music collection. To my ears, HDCD encoded CD's sound like vinyl minus the surface noise.

    What more could you want?

HDCD have very little if no background noise at all. They sound very clean but seem to bland sort of like pure audio settings.

High Definition Digital Compatable is a coding system that expands standard 16 bit CDs to 20 bits of audio information. You have to have a HDCD compatible DVD or CD player to take advantage of the extra 4 bits of information, but a HDCD will play in any CD player. You must look pretty hard at CD or its case to see the tiny HDCD logo. There are a few companies that make HDCD compatable DVD players, NAD and Rotel come to mind, but a HDCD compatable DVD player won't necessarily play SACD or DVD-Audio discs. They are completely different formats.

Denon's 5900 universal DVD player decodes HDCD. Trouble is it costs $2k, but it also plays SACD and DVD-A. The Denon 2900 universal DVD player does not include an HDCD decoder but it costs half of what the 5900 costs. My Toshiba SD-9200 DVD player already included an HDCD decoder though, and I use it primarily to listen to my CDs now. It makes a very good CD player.

The Music Hall CD-25 CD player decodes HDCD, as does the Shanling CD-T100. Of course, they are not DVD players. From what I remember, Rotel seems to be a proponent of HDCD in its receivers.

I'd suggest the Music Hall CD-25 as a good stand-alone CD player that is compatible with HDCD. Going the route of finding a new DVD player that includes HDCD decoding seems to have too steep a price tag for me.

Man.... sorry Steve but SACD has a place and so does vinyl. HDCD is better than Redbook but not the cat's **** over the other 2. I like HDCD but I imagine it will fall by the wayside even if SACD and DVD-A don't take off only because there aren't enough artists coming out with the format.

If a player has HDCD decoding, I'd take it as a bonus, not an essential feature. I have a Rotel RCD-1070 which is HDCD compatible but there are such few HDCD recordings it is unfortunately almost a waste.

I would say that "won't necessarily play", is an understatement.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

If your receiver does HDCD decoding, do you also need a HDCD player to listen to an HDCD encoded disc?

Nope. Just make sure you use the "digital out" from your CD player or DVD player to your receiver.

you silly guy.. you're just scratching the surface of great soundins discs... yeah SACD and DVD-audio both sound better than HDCD's.

FYI HDCD's are mastered in 20bit information. instead of the 16 bits all the other CD's are mastered at. SACD and DVD-audio are mastered at a amazing 24bits... and sound every bit incredible of those 24bits.

Then there are the short lived MFSL (mobile fidelity sound labs) gold cd's which are awesome sounding as well.

my 4 yr old Toshiba SD3109 DVD player decodes HDCD's... and they sound pretty good. but there are very few artists releasing HDCD's so it's not worth the extra cost.
