I just pulled the trigger last night and bought the Denon 2900 and a Monster HT 5100 power center. Both products were integrated into the HT last night. I have to say I am truely IMPRESSED with the Deno in both vidio and audio quality. I was very sckeptical that the Denon could beat my Cal Audio Labs but hands down that 12 bit dac is vibrant. I also purchased 2 DVD-A's(Eagles Hotel California and Forenor) and 2 SACD(Toto and G Thorogood) and both WOWed me. Doc I'll probably be pingen ya regarding some set up regarding the lfe levels out of the Denon. Just seems to me that the Bass from SACD/DVD-A are a little lower than I expected? BTW I'm using the 8 Channel pass through from my h/k 520 then out to my Outlaw 770.

The monstr Power Center cleaned up a ground loop between my DTV HD box and ground which I was able hear a hum when I connection the component vidio into my Sony high def 57". The HT5100 munched it for breakfast. Also I through in Star Wars and flipped to the pod race and drove the current levels up to about 9amps. Truely intense but it asked for more!

Also while I'm at it I received the CS400i from fgr41 and it was PERFECT! fgr if you are ever in the KC area please give me a shout because I owe ya a beer bud. Hats off to you and thanks for making this transaction truely enjoyable.

    Here tooooo some new TOYS:D

Henry - I am picking up the HTS5100 also, glad to hear I will be happy. The Denon really is the standard by which others are measured these days.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Now is this the same for movie watching on these players using the digital out since its a decoder on its own.. Or is that a no no as well?
I was also a little disappointed at the analog cables thing. Apparently some of the high end players are coming out with a single firewire connection that eliminates the need for the 6 analog cables. Of course this assumes your receiver/processor has firewire support...

As far as movies go, I've been letting the Denon's multi-channel processor handle everything - I'm betting that it's dolby D processor is better than the one in my 3 year old Onkyo 787. Maybe other Denon owners could chime in on their approach....

I know of many SACD reference level players, so does anybody make a reference level DVD-A player ? I haven't seen one and I wonder why!?!

    HBomb,

Where did you buy the Thorogood SACD? I went looking for it yesterday, but no luck. I did come back with a couple of new Bowie SACD's however. :D

CC had about 4 when I strolled through. If you want I can go grab you 1 and ship it to ya? No Problem... If so I'll stop by after work if you want. I just hope I'm not confusing it with the dvd-a but I'm almost certain it is sacd...

Jesse, the closest DVD-A near reference player would be Denon DVD 3800. At least, that was true a year ago, that's why I bought mine. But its reputation ain't close to XA777ES SACD...
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

    HBomb,

Cool! I'll run by the local CC, but I do appreciate your offer. I got the Bowie SACD's at Tower Records, they said their shipment of Thorogood SACD's was delayed.

    Polkatese,

Thanks for the info. I love my XA777ES, but there are some titles on DVD-A only that I would like to have. Crazy format war!!!

    Jesse,
if you are looking into the availability of the format, wait around since it keeps changing/evolving. I was looking for SACD Steely Dan *Gaucho* several months ago, and can't find one, so bought the DTS version. Yesterday, I saw the SACD version at BB. Needless to say, I am a bit miffed since I really want the SACD version. oh well...(not to say I don't enjoy DTS)

    HBombToo:
You need to turn on the option of +10db boost for sub level for SACD/DVD Audio on 2900. This will solve the weak bass issue.

The very same reason why I went with a Universal... BUT, I'll be kicking myself when I'm wiching I went with seperates:(

If the Doc approves of the 2900 and so far I'm amazed, there will not be an upgrade any time soon!:D

Just out of curiosity, what takes precedence, the settings in the Denon DVD player (or any DVD player for that matter) or the settings in the pre/pro?

For instance, and I'm not sure why you would do this, but just for the sake of discussion, what if your speaker settings were set to large in the DVD player and small in the pre/pro. What component wins or what is the net effect??

Hey acdds.. I just got my Denon 2900 DVD player S/D from www.crutchfield.com and it looks to be in unused condition! I have'nt tested it yet though but i've opened it up and everything looks completely new.. No marks, blemishes, scratches nothing on the player. I have everything thats included completely sealed even the batteries.

Was yours in this condition as well? heh odd.. :D

Only thing buggin me is that the manufactur date is May 2003.. Now i've read some review recently on this player and others about there faults and it had many but it was a Mode 1 or version 1 2900.. oviously this leads me to believe that theres a newer version out there with fixes.. So i'm hoping that i dont have the older version.

Mine came in the perfect condition. As soon as I opened it I went over that thing with a microscope looking for marks but didn't see any. Mine had sealed batteries and manuals. I asked a crutchfield rep when I ordered what constitutes a scratch and dent model he said, cosmetic flaws, functional (but repaires) flaws, and units that were returned incomplete (missing manuals, remotes, power cords etc..). So either our units were flawed internally or the were returned missing pieces. Either way, I could care less, I've had mined for about a month now and had absolutely no problems. What kind of flaws did you read about? Got a link? My manufacture date is March 2003.
