RT600 vs Monitor 50

I have an opportunity to buy a set of used speakers;

For $100 a pair of Polk RT600 and a CS200

$150 for a pair of Polk Monitor 50 and a CS1

I currently have some old 70's Technics for my mains, the Sony SS-B1000 for my rears, a 100w Sony subwoofer (got it for $30, not gonna complain!) with an Onkyo TX-SR304 5.1 receiver that is 65w/channel

The RT600 seems to have a wider frequency range and is a matching (black) set whereas the Monitor 50 has a more narrow range and the towers are cherry with a black center.

as a college student... is it worth the extra $50 (and a 2 hour round trip drive to get them) to get the Monitor 50's?

Also, how would the CS200 blend with the RT600's? I think the CS200 are using a 4.5" driver instead of the 6.5 in the 600's

    well, the rt600 are older, so they may need some work. I have never heard these speakers, but i would imagine they are a notch above the monitors. The monitor line is Polks bargain line of speakers.

    read this, maybe it will help you make up your mind.

    Ive owned both these speakers,and fwiw,i'd choose the Rt600's all day long! They were nice sounding speakers! Didnt care to much for the Monitor series!

    Keep the gas money and the extra $50 and take the RT600/CS200 all day long if they are in decent shape. As a college student you will be moving periodically anyway so a nick here an there aren't really a big deal that a shapie cant cover. I had the CS200 with RT8s and for a bit with RT800 and it blends fine. You'll end upupgrading when you get your degree anyway so they will be great for a few years.

    Well I picked up the RT600 set... Good choice! Thanks for the help. Even without my subwoofer (at school), they still put out plenty of bass. There is also a "soundstage' which I've never experienced before!

    One embarrassing thing... I plugged in my iPod and was wondering why all of my music sounded really bad... then it occurred to me that everything was ripped at 128 or 160kbps.... put on a CD... man, what a difference!

    Congrats! It's pretty wild how good gear exposes poor quality sources. Rip your CDs into FLAC and you can play them off your computer.
