I got my denon 1803 hooked up to my rti70, a paradigm cc-170, a pair of paradigm micro with a sound dynamics 12 inch sub and after about 30 minutes of playing it gets fairly warm. is this normal?

That's normal especially for home theater. Is your SD subwoofer powered or passive? Passive subs will make receivers run hotter.

having your speakers set to large will also make it run warmer.

my sub is powered and only my mains are set to large, the center and surrounds are set to small.

You're fine there. If it starts to get hot, then you have a problem.
