Hooking up just an A6

I have a Pioneer VSX 1211 and am waiting on my two A9 to arrive. In the mean time, my A6 has arrived and I went ahead and plugged it into my receiver to test it out.
In the manual, it says you need at minimum the left and right hooked up, but messing around in the settings, I was able to get sound to come out. I'm guessing I selected something like simulated 5.1?
Anyways, given the day or so that I've been listening, I've noticed that the sound coming out of the A6 is very muddled. Things sound like they're under water/radio quality. Is this normal...?
Also, I noticed that the right speaker is playing the mids/highs while the left is more low/mids. Is that correct? Clearly the right side is louder/brighter to me.
I have a limited window to return and want to check with people here to see if I might have a defective A6 at hand.
Thanks!
