Replacing Potentiometers on CS1000p & RT3000p Speakers

I need to replace a potentiometer (bass level control) on one of my CS1000p speakers. I ordered a new one from Polk and wanted to ask those who have done this before what is the easiest way to get at it before I attempt to pry-off the plastic cover on the front.

Is removing the plastic cover the correct way to replace it or do you have to come in from the rear? With the amplfier removed, I don't really see how you could do it from the rear so I am assuming the plastic cover over the knob is probably removable.

Does it just snap on?

If so, what's the best way to remove it without breaking it off?

Your help will be greatly appreciated because I don't really want to break the plastic cover removing it and end-up having to glue it back on afterwards!

Here are pictures of the plastic cover and the replacement potentiometer:

Well I thought about another possible way to get at the pot might be to remove a driver and reach in behind it?

C'mon guys, surely someone has replaced or removed one of these controls.

Removing a driver is the easiest and safest way to find out. You will have to take one of them out to feed the wiring back into the subwoofer cavity that is shown in the back regardless if is front or rear mounted.

Thanks for the reply. That's what I did and then saw for sure that the only way to remove the pot is by removing the plastic cover. It was just pressed-in and came right off undamaged with a little pry.

But you are correct in feeding the wire. The hole that the wire feeds through is too small to just slip the new connector through without removing the rest of the wires first, pushing the pot connector through, and then running the thinner wires back through again. If Polk would have made the hole a little bigger it would be easier but still isn't too hard.

I thought that it was front mounted, as rear mounting into a solid front piece would make the volume dial near impossible to set in place on the pot shaft.

Nice to know that this part is in stock. I ordered 2 as I have one bad one right now and for the future?

Yeah I bought a few extra too. They are like $12 each. Even though my others work, a couple of them are kind of "rough" when you turn them. Well-worth the $12, especially since they come fully-assembled ready to install.

Is it possible to attach a pull string to the bottom from the back and pull it out with the old one and use it to feed the new one back in?
