    Had to look up FOrmal Logic but did not help.

    Formal logic is a set of rules for making deductions that seem self evident. Syllogisms like the following occur in every day conversation.

    All humans are mortal.
    Socrates is a human.
    Therefore Socrates is mortal.

    Mathematical logic formalizes such deductions with rules precise enough to program a computer to decide if an argument is valid.

    What none of you had a liberal arts education where formal logic classes were required?

    See this thread for some explanations. The humor is in the IFF. Formal Logic says, "iff" signifies "if and only if".

    As a Philosophy major with my senior seminar coming in Advanced Formal Logic, I even found that joke lame. Though not nearly as lame as my senior seminar....
    I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter.     Kind of reminds me of what someone once said about a popular female singer's albums; either you'll like the whole album or you'll hate the whole album, but you'll never just like one side. I'm talking about NORa Jones, of course.

    This joke doesn't work for CD's or Downloaded MP3's, unfortunately. One of the hazards of modern technology.
