And they change something that ruins it?

We went to one of our favorite Mexican places tonight. It's nothing fancy, a self serve place with good food and prices....Until tonight.

They jacked up the prices 15-20% on everything, and now it's as pricey as good sit down places here in town. We used to get take out for the family once a month or so, but not anymore.

It's too bad, I'm sure they're going to lose business.

Well, I'm sure you've noticed prices jacked up at the grocery store, restraunts are no different. They get their supplies jacked up so the cost gets passed on. You'll see alot more comming.

It's bound to happen eventually. Would you like higher prices or for them to go out of business?

I have have crappy luck with pizza lately. My favorite place here in Sherman Oaks burned badly 6 months before I moved to Indiana, and I was looking forward to going there again when we came back to L.A. The place now is worse than Domino's ever was. I found a new place that was called Oakfire, but they are now out of effin' business!

Up until a couple of days ago McDonalds had a small hot fudge sunday on their dollar menu. For a buck it was a decent small snack and not a bad deal. Went by yesterday, and it was not longer on the dollar menu...but was on the "extra value" menu and the price had increased to $1.49. A 10% or 15% increase I could understand...but 50% in one jump is out of line IMO.

I definitely get that prices are going up, but when you're a self service restaurant and you increase your prices to what full service restaurants in the area charge....Well I just don't see that being a good business plan.

Let's put it this way. Say Carl's Jr raised their prices to what Red Robin charges, would you still be going to Carl's Jr?

That 's a family of five that we were buying for once a month or so (we're talking 50ish out the door), and now we're pretty much priced out. My wife and I will probably still go our every few months or so by ourselves, but that's a loss of five meals a month from our family alone, and we're probably on the plus side of income for the area. You have to wonder how those on a tighter budget than us feel about it.

In this economy, maybe a huge jump in prices isn't the best answer.

Exactly....so your dollar buys you less. Sound like a good principle to subscribe to ? People should pay more attention to the value of the dollar and what makes it go up or down. Many have no concern over it, until they see the results while spending that dollar.

Kind of off subject but here goes:

Went to one of my favorite local restaurants, probably have been there 100 times.

Halfway though the meal I excused myself to go "power my nose".

While I was in the restroom, the cook walked in and took a whiz.

I was drying my hands after washing them, and the cook walked out WITHOUT washing his hands.

Got back to my table, took a another bite, and stared at my plate. My wife asked what was wrong. I didn't want to say anything, but she asked again. I explained what happened in the restroom and I said that now I though my food tasted "like ****" (not that I would really know....but I can sort of guess). She said I was being rude.

I don't want to go back to the place. Am I being too sensitive? Should I have said something to the owner and likely got the minimum wage kitchen guy fired? Should I assume he washed his hands after he got back to the kitchen?

A lot like a Seinfeld episode about a pizza restaurant owner named "Poppy".

I think most people have noticed, and are quite concerned that the value of the dollar continually falls. What are they supporsed to do about it?

I understand this gripe. But, do this for me - Go to a store, and price the basics of, lets say tacos. Cheap steak, cilantro, onion, tortillas, avacado, and a lime to boot. Let's say you already have the seasoning and oil at the house. Now tell me what is less expensive, home made tacos or the ones at your resturant? I find that a lot of times, it is cheaper to eat out then cook for two. Food prices are killing us.

Now we mostly use fresh items, we have been avoiding pre-made food/frozen food for a good while now, and I guess we're eating better, but man it is costing a lot more. Heck, when we go out to our favorite mexican joint, we even get free chips and salsa!

I used to eat at fast food joints most days, and it was cheap, but it was making me fat, my best deal now is Subway, six inch with no cheese, its going to cost me on average $2.00 more then McD's, but I feel much better about what I'm putting into my body.

Oh...I dunno, maybe not support policy that destroys the dollars value ? Maybe write your rep when they decide to support policy that lowers the value. If you demand nothing, you get nothing. Squeeky wheels get the oil.

John, have you tried Shakey's pizza? I think they are still around in the L.A. area. They have the best pizza sauce I have ever tasted. I haven't been there in about 9 years now, but if it's still the same, you need to try it. Great pizza (for a "chain" pizza place)!

Hate it when menus get dumbed down. Used to go to the Irish Rover regularly and get some bubble and squeak or black pudding. Now they have a freakin' "Jamaican pork sandwich" on the menu, but no black pudding.

I'm not sure some of you get what I'm saying.

What I'm saying is this place where you order your food at a counter, sit down and wait for them to call your number, go get your food when they do, get your own drinks etc. is now the same price as decent local restaurants that have a waiter ask you what you would like, brings you your drink and refills, brings your food to you, etc.

This isn't about inflation, I get every place is raising prices, it's about not checking the competition and pricing yourselves out of a niche market. Granted, now I'll have to pay a tip, but I'll pay the tip for full service every time when it's the same price/quality as self service (unless I'm in a hurry).
