When I brought home 2 pair of SDA CRS+'s last month my wife was the least bit thrilled, I got the usual what do we need more speakers for, I tried to explain that these were hard to find and when I found them I just had just had to have them, after what I heard about them on this Forum. I bought A nice sanus rack and started building the third system down in the man cave. I added a Marantz CD5003 the rack and hooked them up to one of my Technics integrated SUV 909. She was partial to the Acoustic Researchs we have the AR 58's and AR 18's. hooked them SDA's up and put in Steely Dans Two against Nature had the SDA's on channel A the AR58's on Channel B switched them back and forth, turned the volume up a bit and she said, you know what those polks sound good the best she has heard, I agreed I guess my beloved AR58's have met thier match. I guess the best part is I now told her I'am looking for a new amp for these SDA's and she said ok.

Wife approval -- a hugely significant step. When I got my SDAs (2A) and hooked them up, after listening for a while, my wife said "I didn't know speakers could make such a difference", and "you should have gotten new speakers a long time ago!" Then again, a large part of her approval had to do with the fact that I didn't have to pay a lot for them!
-
Don't you just love it when they get it.Had one of these moments last weekend. Now If I can find some of those SDAs.

My girlfriend has never understood, I don't think she can tell the difference. But the sda1c's did however receive a sentence or two of praise from her. Not all woman are like this though... My Mom has the audiophile ear for sure. She was so interested in my audio systems that she pretty much forced me to build one for her.Speakers:

Actually the Wife has a good ear, she is the one that picked out the Rtia5's and rtia3's, I had my mind set on Energys, and Klipsch she is the one that convinced me to go with the polks for our HT set up. I was suprised when after her hearing those SDA's that she was happy I bought them, and she is diggin the SDA sound we now have 5 pair of Polk speakers two polk centers and a polk sub and she sports her Polk Performance T-Shirt proudly God Bless her.Home Theater

On this note... Do we hear differently? Get a good pair of head phones and do this test... It's really kool and requires a good pair of head phones.
http://www.phys.unsw.edu.au/jw/hearing.html
Here's my results... using laptop's soundcard ( 100% volume) and audiotechnica M50's. Do this test with the wife and see/compare for your selves. These are the lowest increments that I could still hear the tone at.
I know results will vary based on the frequency response of your sound card and headphones... the idea is to compare with your spouse while using the exact same equipment.
CAUTION: You must be in a dead silent room to do this properly. Start out towards the -36 db range so your spouse knows what she is listening for and work your way down. DO NOT START AT THE zero DB MARK!!!
Cheers!Speakers:

I don't think there's much doubt that individuals hear differently. And as I get older, I'm willing to bet that I hear differently from day to day. And some of us even hear voices, errr, uummm, I mean sounds that don't even come from external sources!

Yea, I would think that every single person on the planet has different hearing... When I said "Do we hear differently?", I was simply referring to the differences between "us" big audionutts and our spouses. I am putting my girlfriend through this test for sure, I can't help but pick my brain... she doesn't recognize what I find to be "euphoria" as any thing overly special or exciting.Speakers:

In that respect, I'm not sure whether we 'hear' things differently or if we 'listen' to things differently. While I don't really consider myself a 'big audionut', I was a musician in a previous life, so I certainly listen to music differently than my wife does, picking out this or that instrument part, certain harmonies and other subtleties. But she does find some of the things I point out to her interesting. I think... -

Oh Yea, definitely agree with you. Personal perception is probably one of, if not the most important factor. But I think a lot can be learned from the analytic side of things as well. For example, you might find that she has a better ability to pick up high frequencies and therefore your speakers are too bright for her ( just speaking in general and not targeted at anyone).Speakers:

Congrats, Very Cool ! I am glad you didn't have to resort to the faking your equipment is broke routine for the new gear. LOL. -
I put my GF through the test yesterday. Her results were pretty similar to mine, except at 16 khz it starts to roll off pretty significantly. She also has far less response to frequencies under 100hz. 375, 2khz and 6khz differ as well. Very interesting what we can learn!

My wife and I have both had our hearing tested professionally in the last few years, and we do hear very differently; mine's a lot better.
I'm not sure why and genetics is probably part of it, but knowing that music is very important to me, I've taken caution to protect my hearing more than she has which I'm sure it part of it. -
