B&K AVR 507 Owners

Finally got my system all pieced together, LSi 15, C, FX, B&K AVR 507, SVS PCi, and Denon 2200 and I have a concern about how hot the B&K is getting.

I'm not listening at loud volumes and it gets very hot during normal playbacks. So hot, holding your hand on the top of the receiver for more than 5 seconds is very uncomfortable. Even when I came back to it 24 hours later and it was in "sleep mode" it was very warm.

I have approximately 4 inches of space above it. If memory serves, I believe the manual calls for 3 inches.

I guess my questions to the current owners are...is this heat build up normal (even in sleep mode) or might I have a defective unit? If it is normal, I can't imagine that kind of heat is good for the components. What are the thoughts on keeping it cool. Thanks.

For what it's worth, besides the heat, I couldn't be more happy with the quality of the components and the sound.

Could it be that the LSi speakers are 4 ohm? Is your receiver rated for 4ohm speakers? That would drive your receiver hot and make it turn off since it cant handle the load.

The B&K 507 should have absolutely NO problem running the LSis. Rating is 7 X 185 w @ 4 ohm. That thing is a beast of a A/V receiver.

There are a couple of B&K owners here and I don't think heat is a big issue. Something doesn't sound right.

agreed with Shack, 507 should handle your LSi with ease. I have B&K AV125.7 and Ref50, which has almost identical configuration with 507, and experienced no overheating as you described. The amp gets *pretty* hot during movies or 5.1 music (cause all channels are driven), but when it's on standby, it gets cool really fast. I installed a small computer fan on top of it, and it helps a lot in circulating the air. I have about 4-5 inch opening above the amp, and that's where I have the fan position vertically, blowing air out to the front of the opening. If your 507 still generating heat while the system is on standby, I'd say have it checked, since it's not normal. Hope it helps.
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

I've got the 307, but it has 2 feet of breathing area. It will still get occasionally hot when running hard in 7.1. Nothing I could cook an egg on though.

    Todd,

I too have a 307, but I have 8-9" of space above it to allow for air flow. My 307 did get really really hot though before I had removed one of the shelves from my stand, but has significantly improved when I gave it more space, and also put some 4-4.5" fans into my stand to pull air through continuously. Look HERE to see the cabinet pics that I took when I was putting it all together (click on the cabinet pics so you can better see if it's blurry). Those fans are an EXCELLENT idea to get some air flow through, especially if you're putting it in a cabinet that isn't open enough. I originally bought a few computer fans from Fry's, but when I plugged those things in, it made a whirling sound that made me think that my stand was about to effin launch. That fan went back that night.

I do have a few extra fans that I've removed from our closed stores that we had installed in the cabinetry to keep our processors from overheating (they're not really loud, but then again, I have a oscillating fan running almost 24/7, so I never hear them). If you'd be interested in them and think that one or two would help, lemme know. Since I'm not at home, I don't remember if I have the power cords for them or not, but you may have to get cables from Fry's (like $3 for the plug and cable).

Your other option is a product made by Elan (I think) for $279 or so that you put on top of your 507 and have the air blowing directly up (basically, 2 computer fans installed into a case with pretty lights on the front and really quiet). The only hitch to that is that if you only have 4" space right now, you'd only really have 2" because of that unit, and if you don't have adequate flow out of the space that the 507 is in, that wouldn't help you much either because you'd just be re-circulating hot air in the boxed in area.

Good luck, and lemme know if the fans that I have would be of any help.

I have the 507 and I have no heat problems! I do however have a fair amount of space above it. You can see my set up in the System Showcase. You may want to give B&K a call 1 800 543 5252. Good Luck! Todd.

I've managed to provide some more airflow in the back and given it another inch up top, and the problem seems better (still may need to add a fan); however, there is still some warmth during standby mode. Are your systems completely cool during standby, or is there a noticable temperature difference between off and standby? Thanks for the responses and the excellent pictures of your fan design Brett.

Yes, the receiver stays warm in standby mode. If you're not going to use it for 4-5 days, I usually shut mine off.
