to h/u dvd w/ hdmi and analog cables

Hi guys,
This is for a friend of mine and he asked me i I knew how to do this h/u because he will be laid up for a while. He does not want to record just playback w/ the simplest of set ups. As I understand it he has a tv that is HDMI compatable and a DVR that is not, so could you please by the numbers explain how this would h/u and make him a happy guy.Hopefully this should not be that diffecult unless he's missing something which maybe you can fill in the gaps.

    The thread title and the text mention different pieces of equipment - does he have both a dvd player and a dvr? How about an avr?
