Hello fellow people, as you can see, I'm desperately in need of help. I just ordered Polk Audio Monitor40 Series II off of newegg and I want to hook it up to my laptop for music, games, video editing, youtube, etc. I'm really curious to know if I need to purchase a receiver in order for it to work. If I need to purchase a receiver, can ya'l please send me a link of the cheapest receiver in a price range of 30-60 or a little more that's less than 100$ Because I've saved up money for those speakers and I literally forgot about the receiver. Please help :/ Thanks alot!!!

    Welcome to Club Polk!

You can't run the M-40s without "amplification"; so an integrated amp or a receiver will do.

That's a pretty "tight" price range so maybe you should give Craigslist or ebay a shot!

The only new receiver I can think of in your price range would be the Sherwood RX-4105

    http://www.jr.com/sherwood/pe/SHE_RX4105/

Also the Sherwood RX-4109 (which also has a Phono amp section for playing LP (Records).

    Good luck!

You can also take a look at "lower" powered T amps like these. They won't give you as much ooomph and power as a full blown receiver but might be adequate for laptop sound to power the M-40s? Plus they're cheap

    http://www.parts-express.com/wizards/searchResults.cfm?srchExt=CAT&srchCat=756

You'll have to be "careful" with a T amp because the M-40s are rated for 20 watts each minimum so it will be easy to clip them with a T amp if you go too loud with it.

:/ I don't think I have the time to get one online because there's so many of them. I am really really noob to all of the stuff. I don't know the difference between an amplifier and a receiver. I should've done more research on audio :/

Is it possible for me to get a receiver at Best Buy or Wal-Mart?

Your local Radio Shack might have a Sherwood RX-4109--give them a call!

It seems Best Buy also carries this. You can take a look or have them order one for you. It would arrive at the store!

I totally forgot about Radio Shack!... Hopefully they have they the Pylepro... It says that it's 15w and the Monitor 40 series says that it's power rating is 20-125w. Can pylepro run the speakers?? D:

It can probably run them but if you press it, it will FRY your speakers so you have to be careful. Also, the sound quality on Pyle equipment is mediocre. You'd be better off spending a little more and going with the Sherwood. But it's really your call.

That Sherwood is 100 watts x 2 which is fine.

    Good Luck!

That is true, but more watts makes the amp a little more friendly in that department.

Only the Insignia amp of those two (on ebay) qualifies. The other amp, if you read closely, is only 4 watts by 2 channels R.M.S. so it's not going to power much of anything!

dont get frustrated, its not that big a deal. Take some time, learn a little about what all the numbers mean. lets keep it simple, if you want to utilize 50 watts/channel of power then you want a 100 watt/channel receiver. If you use a 50 wpc receiver to get 50 watts, the receiver is working at full capacity. The harder its working the more distortion it makes. Where as the 100 wpc receiver isnt working hard at all the deliver the 50 wpc. And you have some reserve power for that one certain song.

Thanks for the help! I'm slowly starting to understand with home audio now :D I think I'm gonna have to go with the Sherwood since it has 210W so hopefully it doesn't heat up much. I hope I'm making sense lol

Check your local Craigslist, might be something available there. With your budget I would definitely be looking at used gear.

Adcom GFA-545II, GFA-6000, Outlaw Audio 990, Netgear NeoTV
    Denon DCM-460, DMD-1000, Sony BDP-360, Bravia KDL-40Z4100/S

you might try "receivers" in your search instead of "amps". You may find more options.
