Good receiver for around $300?

I purchased an Onkyo TXSR501. I heard it’s a good receiver, but I have problem with it. I can’t adjust speaker sizes for front and rear which is making it very hard to setup my Polk RM6005 speaker system correctly. I am thinking about returning it and buying some other brand that is at the same price.

What is a good receiver for around $300 that I can adjust individual speaker size? It doesn’t have to be top of the line, just make good sound… Thanks!!

IMO unless you go for the HIGH End expensive models you probably wont get as much out of it. Havent seen too many Yam owners round here..Seems Everyone is a Marantz, NAD, Denon, Carver Onkyo H/K fan. But hey thats just all the Audiophiles round here, its your $. Go to BB and CC and wherever else and play around and RESEARCH. Hell i came into this thing blind and I learn something new everyday i come in here. I wanted to possibly get an amp to power my fronts but the TXSR 500 doesnt even have Pre outs . Bottom line go for what you like.

Check the instruction book or call their custumer service. That Onkyo should have a bass management system.

If you want another receiver, look at Yamaha. They have some very nice receiver for $300.

    Thanks for the help…

It does have a bass management system, but you can only specify all speakers and not individual speakers.

I purchased the RM6005 Speaker kit and I want to hook my sub to the L,R front speakers like the manual suggest. From what I am reading in the manual for the 501 is that if I turn the sub off then all channels get full sound with no crossover. That is fine for the front speakers because the sub will filter out the lows, but nothing will be done with the center and rears. They will get the lows feq, which they can’t handle.

Here is the what it says in the manual.

“To achieve the best bass performance from your speaker system,
you need to set the crossover frequency according to the
size and frequency response of your subwoofer and other
    speakers (front, center, and surround).
If you’re not using a subwoofer, bass sounds are output by the
other speakers and this setting has no effect.”

“You can select: 60 Hz, 80 Hz, 100 Hz,
    120 Hz, or 150 Hz.
The following table lists the crossover frequency
    you should choose depending on
the diameter of your front speakers.”

Should I just set the speakers to 150hz on the receiver, connect my sub to the Sub out on the receiver and set the filter on the sub to 150hz?

That's it. The connection you mentioned should be the best for your RM speakers. 150hz is a little high though, try 120hz. Also, if your sub doesn't have an LFE input, turn your crossover all the way up to prevent double filtering. See...You just saved yourself $300.

Great!! Last question.... The receiver has 3 different sub modes

Mode 1- Sub outputs lows of all channels (will I still get the LFE channel if I use this??)

Mode2- Sub outputs lows of center and surround only

    Mode3- Sub outputs LFE channel

How should I set this? Mode 1 for music and Prologic II and mode3 for 5.1 or 6.1 movies?

Looks like Mode 1 will be your best bet. Yes, your sub will still receive LFE signal. The sub will play the bass for the other 5 speakers PLUS the LFE.
Mode 2 is pretty straight forward.
I don't think Mode 3 will sound good with the RM speakers. Sounds like it's sending full range signals to the 5 speakers and only the LFE to the sub.

Mode 1 should work best for music, pro logic2 and 5.1.
