New here :). I have a pair of Polk Monitor 5's (looking for a pair of 10's) that sound nice with my Polk powered subwoofer. Do you guys think that I will gain much going to the 10's with no subwoofer? Thx.

    Welcome to Club Polk!

You will definitely hear a difference in bass weight moving from 5s to 10s. For most music the M-10s can run alone and do pretty well with the low end if properly amplified IMHO.

I have a set of both and it's no contest on the LOW end.

I won't say that the 10s will reach lower than your sub. But I will say that it is difficult to integrate a sub properly with L/R speakers in a 2.1 system. When I've compared systems 2.0 against 2.1 in the past. Almost all 2.1 systems do not have the same seamlessness that you get from just running in 2.0 with a good set of floor-standers.

    Have fun!

Okay thanks for the response. I'm running a Luxman R-117 ... should have plenty of power :)

I've never heard the Luxman but it is considered one of the best of its kind produced in its period by many! So should sound very nice! Might not have booming RAP impact with Monitor 10s but the bass will be satisfying. Unless your a "monster" bass head?

It's a very nice receiver, no monster bass head here ... just looking for a nice balanced speaker. I also have a set of new B&W 685's that I'm using my Polk Sub with, and I compared them to the Monitor 5's ... the 5's just sound better all around!

Also, I'm within an hour of Audio Classics ... and they have a set of 10's :). So I might have found a pair!!! Just need to contact them.

If you prefer the Polks over the B&Ws then your tastes are very similar to my own! And you'll love the 10s. Should sound very nice on the Luxman.

How much are they asking. Monitor 10s usually sell for about 100 a pair. But one could go to 150 for a "minty" pair. Higher than that...it's the buyer's call (depends on how much you want them)?

    Welcome!
If you get a pair of monitor 10s make sure you buy or make appropriate stands for them. I believe the angle of the top of the stands is in the 3 to 6 degree range. If I remember correctly there are some plans in a thread somewhere. I'd do a search. Proper stands do make a big difference. I've had mine since 1986 and I still love them.
