Velodyne VA-79XII

Okay I hope it's okay I posted this in this section. Couldn't really see another place for it, otherwise Mods please move if it's in the wrong section.

Anyway here is my set up:

Receiver: Onkyo TX-NR509
Mains: SDS400 (aka Monitor 4)
Surrounds: MiniMonitor II
Center: CSi20


So today I was able to purchase this sub: Velodyne VA-79II for $40. I think I did pretty good on that price, although the sub is a little old. :question: I saw Velodyne and the price seemed good so I just pulled the trigger without really researching. It's in pretty good shape; save for some dings and a small tear on the grill. It sounds pretty good; a lot better than my Yamaha HTIB sub.

I guess my questions are these:

1. Did I do okay with the sub? (price, quality etc.) I tried looking it up, aside from Velodyne website couldn't really see much talk from any forums regarding the sub.

2. How do I connect it? My old sub had a single rca connector in the back so I was a no brainer. Now this sub has more than a few. 2x Stereo rca in the back and LR speaker connectors in the back too. I've connected a single rca to the sub from the receiver. Should I get one of those mono to stereo rca cables?

ok these are my concerns
1. what are you trying to accomplish ?
2. you ask how to hook it up but say it sounds pretty good .. How do you know it sounds good , if ya are asking how to hook it up ?
3.heck of a price on a sub ..but ..it's not a good sub by today's standards
.......this is an approximately 18 year old sub ... possibly older ... for 40 bucks .. can't go wrong ---even if it turns out to be fire wood....maybe it's like new ...... & I hope it is but it's still older technoligy concerning subs ......... I know this because Im going through the same kinda thing .... I bought an older Velo from a guy about 4 years ago & this thing in PERFECT condition .... he was in love with thing cause he bought it new .... but it's from 1994 ....just spent 65 bucks getting it refoamed & guess what I have ..... an 18 year old sub

And as a disclaimer .... if your system sounds good to you .... that's all that matters........ just tryin in my way to welcome you to the forum & open your eyes to the many ways "we" can spend your money

Old is Old as far as subs go .....subwoofers have come so far in 20 years ......

As for what I'm trying to accomplish, originally is to just get a different sub. The yamaha I had came in a home theater package. I wanted to put it up for sale but I knew wouldn't really sell with out the sub [because I was using the sub] so I had to find a replacement. My budget wasn't much higher than what I bought the Velodyne for.

After hooking it up and listened to it I was amazed by how my whole set up sounded. My original thought was that a sub is a sub, you can't really do much with it. But once I heard the Velo the mindset changed. I guess I liken a sub to salt in cooking. If you want to really bring out the flavors, doesn't matter if it's sweet/salty/tangy, add salt. Likewise if your low end is good, the top end gets brought out more. So, now I've kind of opened my eyes, or should I say my ears, to the low end business when it comes to audio. I guess now my new "what am I trying to accomplish" is to learn a bit more when it comes to subs, with the base point of my Velodyne unit.

I think semantics allows me to say it sounds pretty good and still ask how to hook it up. For starters comparing my Yamaha sub to the Velodyne, the Yammy, now, sounded fake/artificial/rough. But I also didn't know if I could possibly break something with how I was hooking it up; semantics :cheesygrin:. Anyway to me, this sub is leaps and bounds, but wasn't sure if a different connection will make it better.

You're right about the 18yo sub and the if the system sounds good to me then it does.

Overall, I guess I can put it like this: I have a degree in Financial MGMT and our motto is "maximize shareholder wealth." Doesn't matter how much investment you put in, you have to try and maximize your stake. So with the money I put in [want to put in] did I maximize my utility/return? For 40bux is did I do as best as I could? Is there a way I can micromanage or make a different connection and what not to even stretch the return of the 40bux? :eek:. I understand I have to spend more to get more, believe me I know lol. But, this is what I've got to get my toes wet.

Sorry if the analogy is bad, that is really how I see things :cheesygrin:

you did great ...... buying used is a great way to get the best bang for your buck ......all my stuff is used except my lsi9's & if I would have known then what I know now ..................

what about the connection? is it sufficient the way it is? I read other threads, it seems that most people just do what I did. Since these are newer subs though and you said they're quite different, do I have a problem?
