My hard drive is starting to make more and more noise, even with a fresh install of Win 7. Is this something to be concerned about? I know these things don't last forever.

Can you be more specific about what kind of noise (i.e. clicking, grinding, whining)? Also, try to look at the SMART statistics on the drive, as that can sometimes give a clue about what is going on. A good (and free) program for that is CrystalDiskInfo.

If its three years old- replace it. If two, toss a coin.
Either way, always have a good back up.

Back it up immediately, replace it as soon as you can.

+1000. HD's aren't supposed to get louder and louder. HD failures ruin your entire week. Backup important data and replace ASAP. Then place the old HD in storage for a while just in case you may have missed some old data.

The only alternative here is to make sure the noise isn't coming from somewhere else (often the fans). But if you are sure it's the HD, then don't mess around. You're drive is telling you it's about to die.

Samsung F3's are nice, or you can go WD. If this is your main OS drive, now is a perfect time to consider SSD. The prices are coming down on SSD's and you will surely notice the performance increase. They are extremely fast drives, I would suggest using a secondary drive for those nonessential programs.

FYI it's a horrible time to have to buy a hard disk drive right now. Prices are still sky-high from the flooding in Thailand. Most drives are two or three times the price of what they cost pre-flood. A 1TB Samsung Spinpoint F3 drive will cost you $159.99 today, but back in September of 2011 the antediluvian price was only $59.99.

I run SSD and will never go back. Not the best cost per GB, but they are very speedy and you won't hear ANY noise lol.
You can go to Seagate and download SeaTools and the Acronis program and it can copy your entire harddrive to the new one.

SSD is fine as long as you don't mind paying the extraordinary premium (even compared to the current high prices of platter-based hard disk drives) and you don't need a lot of capacity. In most cases that means they are not suitable for storing media libraries.

I have a Intel X25-M 120GB Solid State Hard Drive on the way actually. It's a replacement because the previous one died. I do want to try some of the newer Intel Solid State drives because I heard they've gotten a lot faster since the X25-M.

My Hard Drive now only makes noise during reading and writing (normal) but it started doing it LOUDER. I have a 2TB Western Digital Caviar Black as storage that has been great. I also have another 500GB WD Caviar Black that was a year old before it started make louder reading and writing noises. Is this more normal than I thought?

Great SSD, I have one but I need a 256. Was going to list this in the FM this week.

I'm using the C300 128gb Sata III drive and love it.
