Wow a lot has happened since my last post. Once again thanks for replying everyone. After reading all this I dnt care what ravenelli is saying. If you want to make a point that's fine but back up your statement dude.

I currently am running a pioneer VSX 1021 receiver. I plan to upgrade to an elite so I can run an amp. For some reason the emotiva xpa3 isn't powerful enough for some reasn according to ravenelli. I take it from the other postings he iswrong?? What is the power handling capability of the A5's?? It seems my receiver could use help from an amp already. After adding the high A3's to make it a 7.1 I noticed I had to turn the volume up by about 10 to 12 notches than I had previously. It sounds great now but I know there is a higher capability with these speakers and I aim to get there

I am currently running a 7.1 with RTI A7's upfront set to large with a Pioneer Elite SC-35 @ 140 watts per channel of Ice amp power. It is plenty of power for my setup. I have inquired about getting a amp but its not necessary.
I ran that same reciever with my monitor system and I got my SC-35 a few days before I got my a7's so I hooked it up and there was a clear jump in clarity and sound quality. I did not even try the 1021 with my a7's because I new if there was that kind of jump with the monitors there was no way that 1021 was going to power my RTI's properly. Those Emotiva amps and the Rti seem to be very common together and no one I have seen has complained. In fact there are a few youtube vids of people bragging about a Rti/Emotiva setups.
What are you looking to spend to get some power?

I've heard nothing but solid positives on the ICE amps. Very capable power.

The Emo has more than enough for those speakers, even though it wouldn't be my first choice. The 1021 in surround mode is most likely only tossing out 40 watts per channel if your using 7 channels, so turning up the volume means that it's working that much harder to get to the same SPL's/volume.

Look for a used Pioneer Elite with the ice amps in them, should take care of your power needs for a long time.

i have been reading some on the "ice amps" in pioneer receivers. im not familiar with which model is reasonably priced used or new that has the ice amp technology. i sent a request to pioneer and asked all the receivers that offer the ice amp technology. so will see what happens. do the ice amps really negate the need for an external amplifier when running A9's or is it best to get an external amp to CORRECTLY push them?

Man I hate how this thread got derailed by passionate, but opinionated Polkies.

Ft_townman, I re-read all your posts. I agree you should upgrade your electronics - AVR w/external amp flexibility. My point of confusion: your indecisiveness for your LRs - the 'A5s or 'A9s. If you think your final HT space will require more than the s, go for 7s or 9s. Otherwise you could overwhelm your space.

You may the find 'A5 mid/upper bass to lower midrange lacking. Likely overwhelmed by the middle midrange to lower treble, an RTi A series characteristic. I think Trey (VR3) could do his "magic" to your satisfaction!

Some side notes: Several years ago I talked to a Polk CSR. He told me the 5s: close to a verticle CSi A6 w/drivers rearranged. Or a 2.5 'A3
7s: A3s w/2 7" subs. Since purchase I've discovered the mids & subs do NOT have separate chambers. I plan to change that soon.
    9s: a verticle CSi A4 w/3 7" subs

How do you plan to change the internal chambering of the a7?

Personally Tony, I think you'd be opening a can of worms trying to redo the internals of the cabinet. Why not just get different speakers bro ? Save yourself the headaches. Better yet, build your own, plenty of DIY kits on the market with pre built cabinets that you could modify to your hearts content, and throw in the parts yourself.

Apologies to the OP for hijacking this thread

Still working on the details. Inside the the 'A7 you'll find a bracing ridge all the way around the closure just below the MW's port. I want to use something w/that brace to close off the "top*" from the "bottom*." The trick is getting the (sturdy) part inside. Working on a 2 piece tongue & groove
    * top = MW; bottom = Subs

You're probably more right than I'm willing to admit. Someone suggested it could change the mid's voiceing. Then again over the past 3 years I've seen many Polksters expend more $ & time for less benefit than this should net.

I love the 'A7 platform; $ didn't govern my choosing the '7 over the '9* regardless what its* fan base claims.

    Nope. Tools or lack of.

Remote possibilty. If you were considering DIY where would you start? Thanks in advance.
