What Center speaker would be a good match for a pair of old Monitor 4.5 speakers? I just bought an LG 55" 3D LED and the internal speakers sound like an old transistor radio. I connected the tv sound via the digital optical to my Onkyo AVR and the 4.5's (I know they are old, but I realy like them and don't want to replace unless I have to) and the overall sound is better but I want to bring out more clarity on the dialog. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Your best bet would be and try to find another 4.5. that way you know you have the correct timbre match.

And if you find a pair you will have a back up for parts.

A long time ago, the Polk Audio Web Site, made suggestions for Center and surround speakers for their older speaker lines. At the time, I was using Monitor 5 Series IIs, and the suggested Center Channel was a CS245i. I have one, and it was a decent match for the Monitor 5s, which I believe are similar to your Monitor 4.5s. It would depend on how old your Monitors are, and to a certain extent, what tweeter they have. There is a CS245i for sale in the flea market right now, so you may want to try that out. The suggestion to get another Monitor 4.5 is probably the best one as far as a match, but finding an exact match could be tricky.

The Monitors were purchased around 1989. I'm not at home but I checked the Polk Vintage site and while they don't show a description of the Monitor 4.5 they do show the 4 model whic has SL1500 tweeters.

There is also a 4.6. If you post pictures of your speakers with the grill covers removed, there is likely someone on the forum who will be able to identify the speakers and tweeter for you. That may help with finding a center that will match. I think if you are just looking to get more clarity from the dialog a CS 245i will do that for you, but somebody else may be able to suggest a center that will do better.

Also, I think that once you have your speakers identified, it will be easier to find a speaker or pair from around the same time frame as your speakers to use as a center.

    Your 4.5's may be different.

    Klipsch RB81, KG3.5, B&W DM602.5, Polk.
Subwoofers: Klipsch RW10, Triad ProSub Bronze.

The more I think about it, the more I think I may replace the 4.5's with another newer set of of bookshelf Polk's. I'm trying to buy a Csi3 center from another forum member and if that goes thru I'll look for a pair of Polk bookshelf's that that match that center. Any suggestions?

I'll still keep the 4.5's and put them in the bedroom on my marrantz 2230, they're all like part of the family...

Find a good pair of Monitor 7 if you want to stay with the vintage Polk sound.
