Epson 8700ub Bulb going out??

Hey guys,
I have a epson 8700ub with 550 hours on the bulb. On monday the projector was working fine, last night I go to turn it on and It is extremely dim. From my experience bulbs get dim slowly over time and then eventually go out. They usually dont get dim suddenly.

The bulb states on the epson website that its life is about 4000 hours, now i understand that 4k is fairly unrealistic. i would expect about 1200-1500, but 550? The brightness is about 10 to 20 percent of what it was. extremely dim.

I have double and triple checked the projector settings, they are all as they were, no eco mode or high alt settings ect.

I havent replaced the bulb yet, Is this something that you would call epson on? I am guessing that i am SOL. If you guys have any suggestions on it let me know.

I have bypassed my denon and plugged directly into the projector with still the same problem, So i am fairly sure that it is the projector that is causing the problem

STOP USING THE PROJECTOR!!!! This happened to me and the bulb exploded int he projector. It is a known issue with a batch of bulbs from Epson. They will replace the bulb for free. Do a search for my thread on this subject.

Epson will replace the lamp for free under your product warranty, regardless of whether or not the lamp reached it's rated hours. If there's something wrong with the lamp, it's covered for a replacement. They're a great company, and will certainly help you out. Contact them.

+1 Awesome company and amazing customer service. The lamp blew up inside my projector and sent shards of glass dust all over. The projector was toast. Instead of giving me the same old model, the gave me a brand new current model.

Yup. Bulb blew in my 8500 and Epson next-day'd me a new one. Fortunately, the glass didn't go anywhere outside of the bulb compartment, so I was able to clean it out myself.

I replace several blown lamps each year where I work. We use Epson business class projectors. Those are easy to clean out. Remove the old lamp, hold projector upside down over trash and gently shake the particles out. Then insert the replacement lamp and you're good to go.

Projector's are normally designed to contain these pieces in the lamp housing, as it's common to have a lamp explode at end of life.

    Update..
I contacted epson and they over-nighted me a new bulb. I cant complain about epson at all, friendly and easy to work with. I just explained what happened and they sent me a new one.

I looked at the old lamp element(after it was cool) and it looked like it may have gotten a little hot, it was discolered and sagging compaired to the replacement.

Thanks for all you help guys, this one turned out good!
