Subwoofer Out Onkyo TX-SR504

Hello this is my first post here and I have a question concerning the subwoofer out on my Onkyo TX-SR504. It says Subwoofer (pre out). So I assume it is just a feed directly from the preamp and isn't filtered with a crossover. Is that correct? I have the crossover on my older Acoustic Research powered subwoofer set to 80 Hz.. I'm running CS1 center and Monitor 30's for front with some Pioneer surrounds.

No the sub has a crossover of whatever your Onkyo has set it when you ran auto-calibration (assuming you did run it). Its probably set at 80 hz in the Onkyo. Its say's "Subwoofer pre-out" because the Onkyo isn't actually powering the sub, the built in amp in the sub is powering it. The signal however is filtered to whatever the crossover is set at in the Onkyo's settings.

I would put the crossover knob on the actual sub amp to 120 since the signal your sending it will be filtered at whatever the Onkyo's crossover is set at. Its easier to integrate the speakers this way IMHO.

So when I set the crossover to the speakers at 80 Hz. then the subwoofer out is only receiving from 80 Hz. down? That's what I wanted to know as the manual for the Onkyo isn't very specific about that. I'll try raising the crossover setting on the sub to 120 or more.

I just recently got the new CS1 and Monitor 30's and set it up this way. I was running some small satellites at 120 Hz. before. But I noticed when I got the new Polks and set the sub crossover and the Onkyo to 80 Hz. my sub got really louder and I had to lower it about -3 dB. on the Onkyo or it was too loud.

BTW I don't believe my Onkyo has any auto-calibration. If it does I haven't found it. Does anyone know if it does? It's a few years (4-5) old so maybe it doesn't.
