Our mare finally gave birth yesterday morning. :smile: What a thrill it was to walk out to the barn and see this little thing on wobbly legs barely a few hours old! The world is a wonder to her...she is curious about everything she sees and hears. Yesterday was a beautiful day here in more ways than one as it was crystal clear and decent temps, but was very windy so I named her Breeze.

    She has learned to winnie a bit. Getting better on the legs by the hour....starting to prance around and buck a bit. Wating another day or so and will let her see the world outside her stall. Truly an amazing experience both for her and us!

    Have yet to decide what music she'll hear first. Thought about A Horse With No Name but I don't want to confuse her :)

    Mom(Rosie) is a great horse. Very easy going with the foal and she trusts us 100% which makes it so much easier to work with Breeze. I'm not a real big horse person(give me a dog any day) but I have to admit I'm looking forward to some time later talking with Breeze....she's a good listener :)

    My wife (the former rancher) told me that with cows & horses both, it depends on the disposition of the mother. Some will allow you to touch the calf/foal, some will not tolerate it. Are foals afraid of humans, or does she come to you?

    My experience with horses is that when young they are naturally a bit timid. The disposition of the mother has a great deal to do with how the foal will be since it stays close to her for several months. Not sure but it seems to me that if the foal sees mom trusts somebody(be it an animal or a human) then the foal is more inclined to do the same.

    In this case I'm on good terms with mom(esp since I'm usually the "feeder") so mom and baby comes over to see me when I enter the stall. The foal really likes it when I sit may rear down on an overturned bucket and we are eye to eye. This is a new experience for us and one we are truly enjoying.
