    Hmmm...best bluesman since SRV? For a caucasian, possibly.:lol:

    I've seen a couple of his performances on PBS - the Royal Albert Hall was the last.

    I just can't get into him - he has all the chops and licks down and is impressive technically. I don't get that deep down soul touching blues vibe from him though.

    H9: If you don't trust what you are hearing, then maybe you need to be less invested in a hobby which all the pleasure comes from listening to music.

    Very good guitarist, he has strayed from the blues a bit since Blues Deluxe, but great none the less, I really like the Black Country
    project with Glen Hughes.

    How to sing the Blues . . . A Primer

    1) Most Blues begin, "Woke up this morning..."

    2) "I got a good woman" is a bad way to begin the Blues, less you stick something nasty in the next line like, "I got a good woman, with the meanest face in town."

    3) The Blues is simple. After you get the first line right, repeat it. Then find something that rhymes . . . sort of: "Got a good woman with the meanest face in town. Yes, I got a good woman with the meanest face in town. Got teeth like Margaret Thatcher, and she weigh 500 pound."

    4) The Blues is not about choice. You stuck in a ditch, you stuck in a ditch...ain't no way out.

    6) Teenagers can't sing the Blues. Adults sing the Blues. In Blues "adulthood" means being old enough to get the electric chair if you shoot a man in Memphis.

    7) Blues can take place in New York City but not in Hawaii or any place in Canada. Hard times in Minneapolis or Seattle is probably just clinical depression. Chicago, St. Louis, and Kansas City are still the best places to have the Blues. You cannot have the blues in any place that don't get rain.

    8) A man with male pattern baldness ain't the blues. A woman with male pattern baldness is. Breaking your leg cause you skiing is not the blues. Breaking your leg...cause a alligator be chomping on it is.

    9) You can't have no Blues in a office or a shopping mall. The lighting is wrong. Go outside to the parking lot or sit by the dumpster.

    10) Good places for the Blues: a) Highway; b) Jailhouse; c) Empty bed; d) Bottom of a whiskey glass. Bad places for the Blues: a) Dillard's; b) Gallery openings; c) Ivy League institutions; d) Golf courses

    11) No one will believe it's the Blues if you wear a suit,...less you happen to be a old ethnic person, and you slept in it.

    12) Do you have the right to sing the Blues? Yes, if a) You older than dirt; b) You blind; c) You shot a man in Memphis; d) You can't be satisfied. No, if a) You have all your teeth; b) You were once blind but now can see; c) The man in Memphis lived; d) You have a 401K or trust fund.

    13) Blues is not a matter of color. It's a matter of bad luck. Tiger Woods cannot sing the blues. Sonny Liston could. Ugly white people also got a leg up on the blues.

    14) If you ask for water and your darlin' give you gasoline, it's the Blues. Other acceptable Blues beverages are a) Cheap wine; b) Whiskey or bourbon; c) Muddy water; d) Nasty black coffee. The following are NOT Blues beverages: a) Perrier; b) Chardonnay; c) Snapple; d) Slim Fast.

    15) If death occurs in a cheap motel or a shotgun shack, it?s a Blues death. Stabbed in the back by a jealous lover is another Blues way to die. So is the electric chair, substance abuse and dying lonely on a broken down cot. You can't have a Blues death if you die during a tennis match or getting liposuction.

    16) Some Blues names for women: a) Sadie; b) Big Mama; c) Bessie; d) Fat River Dumpling

    17) Some Blues names for men a) Joe; b) Willie; c) Little Willie; d) Big Willie

    18) Persons with names like Michelle, Amber, Debbie, and Heather can?t sing the Blues no matter how many men they shoot in Memphis.

    19) Make your own Blues name Starter Kit: a) Name of physical infirmity (Blind, Cripple, Lame, etc.); b) First name (see above) plus name of fruit (Lemon, Lime, Kiwi, etc.); c) Last name of President (Jefferson, Johnson, Fillmore, etc.); d) For example, Blind Lime Jefferson, Jakeleg Lemon Johnson or Cripple Kiwi Fillmore, etc. (Well, maybe not "Kiwi.")

    20) I don't care how tragic your life, if you own a computer, you cannot sing the blues.

    But on a serious note...who would you rate the best bluesman of the last 20 years? Not someone who has been around for 50 years and is still playing...but who has come on the scene since the death of SRV?

    It's all good...terrible morning....sorry for being snippy.

    I won't rate the best bluesman for the last 20 years, but will give an example of what I talking about.

    I was watching the SRV and Albert King sessions on PBS - and while I was amazed at SRV's playing (at an early stage in his career), it was while watching Albert King play and his minimalist approach to the blues that struck me....while SRV was trying to impress his mentor with blazing speed and technique, Albert King would, to me, get more of an emotional impact with fewer notes - he was 'one with the guitar' - as korny as that sounds.

    Again, just me...but Joe literally assaults the guitar instead of merging with it.

    If Joe can keep blues in the public eye and ear - more power to him - its a great musical genre - I'm dabbling more and more in it in my musical dotage :cheesygrin:.

    I think SRV came to be more like AK towards/in his approach to the music the end of his life...especially after he cleaned up. Bonamassa is still fairly young, but I see him also moving beyond the technical aspects to something "more". My point is there has been no one since SRV that has even come close to what he was within the genre (electric modern blues/rock). Of all the young players to come down the pike (Kenny Wayne Shepard, Johnny Lang, Scott Holt, etc) Joe is the best IMO. Are these guys playing the traditional blues (similar to the parody I posted). No...they are taking it elsewhere...the tradional stuff will have to stand on it's own, because I don't see it coming back. Time and society has seen to that. SRV took the blues/rock of the Winter Bros., Clapton, Hendrix, etc. to another level IMO by tapping into the more traditional blues of the likes of AK and expanding it. In the end I preferred the music of SRV to AK (which is taking NOTHING away from Albert).

    Even though Lang came on the scene several years before Bonamassa, he is a 3-4 years younger...and Bonamassa started his recording career at 22. I think (and it is JMO) Bonamassa is better...but it's cool that the genre is still around, being played by relatively young musicians.

    Srv ripped off Jimi H. a tad much, IMO.:wink: I prefer Jimmy Vaughan to his brother most of the time. Family Style w/ both of them is "fun".

    I like Derek and have some of his albums...and he is an excellent slide player. I still associate him much more towards the Southern Rock genre of his uncle than to even blues/rock. It certainly has some strong blues roots though.

    Joe Bonnamassa started his carrer at 17 in a band called Bloodline along with Robby Kriegers Son, check it out Bloodline. They only had one album that I know of.

    Which also had Miles Davis' son Erin, and Berry Oakley Jr. (thus the name) It was less than a stellar sucess. I was primarily referring to Joe's solo career. Something tells me Joe might even consider Bloodline a non-starter...

    walter trout..tab benoit...white guys...not dead..play the blues...to me bonamassa is great but..there's just something i aint buying about his whole act...in the mid 90s, bb king said something about the then teen-aged jb.. too many notes! to play the blues, you dont need so many notes...bb said, i hope he slows down...again, to my ears all his song essentially sound the same...material-wise, solo, and those blasted vocals! sorry for the bad review... i know at least one guy here feels the same..ther was only ONE rory gallagher and ONE gary moore!

    Walter Trouts Double live Cd is incredible at the Tampa Bay Blues Festival. Gary Moore awesome, Tab Benoit, Albert Cummings,
    Ian Moore, Rory Galagher, those are some blues Guitarists that kick you no what, Joes first few releases are incedible it started to change after Blues Deluxe, those first ones are phenominal, his later a little more mainstream

    I actually like the diversity of some of his later work. I bought "Dust Bowl" a while back and like the slight hint of southern/americana in a couple of tracts. John Haitt and Vince Gill lend a little of that flavor as well.

    He is a great player but most of his songs are only okay. The blazing chops grow tiresome if the song sucks. You could put a fantastic compilation CD together using a song or two taken from all his albums. I thought the show Guitar Center Sessions on directv ch. 101 was excellent and had mostly good songs.

    That's what I said to a friend who sent me some YouTube stuff of Joe's -- he's a great guitar player, but I haven't heard enough of his music (i.e, the songs) to decide if I really, really like listening to him or not.

    Speaking of Albert King, it's really tough for most players to rip off his licks considering he played his guitar strung upside down. Had the pleasure (or should I say, privilege) of seeing him play a whole show from the front row of a small club, about 10-15 feet away. Bunky's, Madison WI, late 70s.
