How do I clean a Yamaha AVR volume control

Hello,

I have a Yamaha AVR RX-V496 that I use in my office for my iTunes playback. It has an optical audio input so it is very convenient to take the optical audio out from my Mac Pro.

The right channel has become intermittent and scratchy and twiddling the volume control clears it up for a while. I thought that a spritz of DeOxit might clean it up. I removed the volume control which is mounted on a PCB, but I don't see a way to spray inside it unless?. Do I dare try to pry off the black plastic cover shown in the pictures? Or will I muck it up permanently. Is the correct procedure to replace the entire board? Or should I refer this to qualified service personnel?

The four holes around the knob don't connect to the interior of the control, they are just part of the casting.

Regards,
Jim

Usually they are sealed, so you just replace the whole board. Sadly, it looks like it's no longer available.

I've peeled off covers on controls like that, and still wasn't able to get into it to clean it, but didn't break anything. You may want to try it. Up to you.

is that an Alps or Noble potentiometer? Well anyways, you can unsolderer the potentiometer and under the legs you will see small gap that you can spray.

Sledgehammer should take care of it. No more noise......at all. Then spend 20 bucks on craigslist for a receiver with optical in's and be done.

I think I will pass on that. There are 24 closely spaced leads soldered to 24 skinny traces under the pot. Way past my skill level with an iron.

I found the PCB at Yamaha - $117.24. If I liked this AVR better it might be worth it, but I don't and there are probably other parts that are on their way out, too. So I am off to Craigslist.

    Thanks for your replies.
